What is a hunting sales associate?

Hunting Sales Associates are retail professionals who specialize in assisting customers with hunting-related products and equipment. They provide knowledgeable guidance on firearms, ammunition, hunting apparel, and accessories, ensuring customers select the right gear for their needs. These associates may also handle inventory, process transactions, and maintain compliance with safety and legal regulations related to hunting products. Excellent customer service, product expertise, and adherence to store and legal policies are essential aspects of their role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hunting sales associate?

To thrive as a Hunting Sales Associate, you need strong knowledge of hunting equipment, firearms, and outdoor gear, often supported by sales experience and, in some areas, relevant licensing or permits. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and inventory management software is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and a passion for the outdoors help build trust and rapport with customers. These skills ensure accurate product recommendations, compliant sales, and a positive shopping experience that drives customer loyalty.

What are some common challenges faced by a hunting sales associate and how can they be addressed?

Hunting Sales Associates often face the challenge of staying updated on an ever-changing inventory of specialized products and ensuring compliance with local and federal regulations for firearm and ammunition sales. To overcome these challenges, associates should routinely participate in product training sessions and stay informed about current laws and store policies. Building strong product knowledge and maintaining excellent customer service are key to assisting both novice and experienced customers effectively. Collaborating closely with team members and management also helps ensure a smooth workflow and up-to-date compliance practices.

About the Role

We're looking for a driven, relationship-focused Outside Sales Representative to grow our presence in the commercial construction market. This role is built for a hunter who thrives on opening new doors as much as nurturing the ones already open.

What You'll Do

  • Identify, pursue, and close new business opportunities with electrical contractors, general contractors, and project owners in the commercial construction space
  • Work assigned leads and self-generate new prospects through cold calls, jobsite visits, and industry networking
  • Build and grow a book of business by developing long-term, trust-based relationships with customers and key decision-makers
  • Serve as a consultative partner to customers — understanding their projects, timelines, and material needs to provide proactive solutions
  • Collaborate with inside sales, counter staff, and vendor partners to ensure seamless quoting, order fulfillment, and delivery
  • Track bid opportunities and stay ahead of upcoming commercial projects in the territory
  • Represent the company at industry events, trade shows, and association meetings to expand visibility and network

What We're Looking For

  • Proven outside sales experience, ideally in electrical, construction materials, or industrial distribution
  • Existing relationships with electrical contractors or GCs in the commercial construction space a strong plus
  • Self-motivated with a hunter's mentality — comfortable prospecting and generating your own leads
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills, with a long-term, customer-first approach
  • Ability to read blueprints/specs and understand commercial electrical products a plus
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

This is an opportunity for someone who wants to build something — a territory, a customer base, and a career — with the backing of an established distributor and the autonomy to run your own book of business.

What We Offer:

We offer a competitive benefits package. Some of which include:

  • 401 (k) plan
  • Health Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Paid Holidays
  • Vacation
  • Employee Negotiated Discounts.

Who We Are

Founded in 1923, Turtle is a fourth-generation, family-owned, and three-generation women-owned business, and one of the nation’s largest independent electrical and industrial distributors. Headquartered in Clark, NJ, our Electrical Distribution division operates 14 branches spanning from coast to coast. It is a significant force in the engineering and procurement of power distribution, automation, lighting, and energy projects, offering integrated services for the industrial and construction markets. Turtle Integrated division provides on-site MRO procurement, cost-saving, and spend analytics across the US and in Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
