Human Centered Design Researcher information

What is a human centered design researcher?

Human Centered Design Researchers are professionals who study and understand the needs, behaviors, and motivations of users to inform the design of products, services, or systems. They use qualitative and quantitative research methods like interviews, observations, and usability testing to gather insights. Their primary goal is to ensure that solutions are tailored to real user needs, resulting in more effective and user-friendly outcomes. These researchers often collaborate with designers, engineers, and stakeholders throughout the development process.

How does a human centered design researcher typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a Human Centered Design Researcher, you'll frequently work alongside designers, product managers, engineers, and marketing professionals to ensure solutions are tailored to user needs. Your role involves sharing user insights, facilitating workshops, and advocating for end-user perspectives throughout the development process. Open communication and collaborative problem-solving are essential, as your research findings often inform design iterations and strategic decisions. This team-based approach helps create products and services that are both usable and meaningful.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human centered design researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Centered Design Researcher, you need expertise in user research, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and a solid understanding of design thinking principles, typically supported by a degree in design, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like user journey mapping software, usability testing platforms, and data analysis tools such as NVivo or Dovetail is common. Exceptional empathy, curiosity, and communication skills help researchers deeply understand user needs and effectively convey insights to design teams. These capabilities are crucial for creating products and services that truly resonate with users and drive successful outcomes.

We welcome individuals from all backgrounds to join us on this journey toward inclusivity and excellence.
Your Role at Delta Faucet:
The Sr. Marketing Research Analyst is a hands-on research leader responsible for designing, managing, and translating primary research into actionable insights that guide business and innovation decisions. This role supports a balanced portfolio of front-end innovation research and broader marketing research, with a strong focus on human-centered discovery, Jobs-to-Be-Done, concept development, concept testing, rapid prototype learning, and prototype refinement.
This person will partner closely with the Innovation Lab to lead, strengthen, and evolve DFC's front-end innovation research process. In addition, they will collaborate with Brand, Product, Channel, and other cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in research methods and will work in lockstep with external research partners rather than simply handing projects off to vendors. They will independently lead work from scoping through fieldwork, analysis oversight, reporting, and stakeholder readouts.
Responsibilities
Research Leadership & Project Ownership
  • Build trusted relationships across Innovation, Brand, Product, Channel, and external research partners.
  • Translate complex qualitative and quantitative findings into clear stories, implications, and recommended actions for Innovation Lab, Brand, Product, and Channel stakeholders.
  • Socialize insights across teams to ensure consistent application in decision-making.
  • Lead research projects independently from intake and scoping through reporting and ensuring key findings are integrated into business strategy and product development.
  • Meet with internal stakeholders to clarify business questions, define learning objectives, identify decision criteria, and recommend appropriate research approaches.
  • Develop research briefs, RFPs, project timelines, and budgets according to the needs of internal stakeholders and external suppliers' capabilities.
  • Evaluate supplier proposals, recommend vendor selection, and manage external research partners to ensure high-quality, timely, and cost-effective execution.

Front-End Innovation & Human-Centered Discovery
  • Partner with Innovation Lab to design and support multi-phase human-centered research that ranges from discovery of unmet consumer needs to prototype development.
  • Work jointly with research partners to apply Jobs-to-Be-Done thinking to refine and quantitatively test unmet needs to prioritize them into territories for ideation and support workshop ideation sessions that result in early-stage solution concepts.
  • Support rapid prototype learning, gathering consumer feedback, and recommending prototype or concept refinements.
  • Help stakeholders sequence learning across discovery, ideation, concept refinement, prototype feedback, and quantitative validation so research is appropriately matched to the business decision.

Qualifications:
  • Strong experience with innovation research using the human-centered design and Jobs-to-Be-Done frameworks.
  • Strong ability to synthesize research into insights, implications, opportunity areas, and recommendations that influence business and innovation decisions.
  • Experience using qualitative research such as contextual inquiry, in-home research, site visits, and observational research to uncover behaviors, workarounds, unmet needs, and decision drivers.
  • Knowledge of when and how to apply advanced statistical techniques, such as discrete choice/conjoint, MaxDiff, TURF, segmentation, or other quantitative methods, even if not personally conducting all advanced analyses.
  • Experience writing/refining research instruments, including questionnaires, discussion guides, and screeners.
  • Demonstrated vendor management experience, including RFP development, proposal evaluation, vendor selection, fieldwork oversight, and output quality control.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Social Science, Psychology, Statistics, Human-Centered Design, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A master's degree is a plus.
  • 5-7+ years of marketing research, consumer insights, design research, innovation research, or related experience.
  • Experience handling confidential concepts, prototypes, research stimuli, and participant-facing materials with appropriate discretion.
  • Proficiency with Qualtrics, SPSS or similar statistical package, and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate clearly to both research and non-research audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, analytical rigor, and hands-on ownership of the research process.

Preferred
  • Experience in durable goods, consumer products, home improvement, building products, plumbing, appliances, or adjacent categories.
