What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HRIS Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HRIS Project Manager, you need expertise in human resources processes, project management methodologies, and systems implementation, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like PMP or SHRM-CP. Familiarity with leading HRIS platforms (such as Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, or Oracle), data migration tools, and project tracking software is typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart by enabling effective cross-functional collaboration. These abilities are crucial for ensuring that HR technology projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

How does an HRIS Project Manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during system implementations?

An HRIS Project Manager works closely with HR, IT, payroll, and sometimes external vendors to ensure a successful system implementation. This collaboration often involves gathering requirements from stakeholders, facilitating regular update meetings, and coordinating tasks to meet project deadlines. Effective communication and stakeholder management are key, as the Project Manager must balance technical requirements with user needs and organizational goals. This role often acts as a bridge between technical teams and HR professionals, ensuring all parties are aligned throughout the project lifecycle.

What is an HRIS Project Manager?

An HRIS Project Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and maintenance of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) within an organization. They coordinate between HR, IT, and other departments to ensure that the chosen HR technology meets organizational needs and is integrated smoothly. Their duties typically include managing project timelines and budgets, ensuring data integrity, and training staff on new systems. HRIS Project Managers play a key role in improving HR processes and supporting strategic decision-making through technology.

About Alvarez & Marsal

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm with entrepreneurial, action and results-oriented professionals. We take a hands-on approach to solving our clients' problems and assisting them in reaching their potential. Our culture celebrates independent thinkers and doers who positively impact our clients and shape our industry. The collaborative environment and engaging work—guided by A&M's core values of Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward, and Inclusive Diversity—are why our people love working at A&M.

The Team

This role will lead a global team of analysts responsible for maintaining and optimizing Workday for our firm, while also providing oversight of our GCC India support team. As an established Workday customer, we are continually adding new modules, enhancing existing functionality, and helping our users get the most out of the platform. The current modules in use are HCM, Recruiting, Talent and Performance, Payroll, Benefits, Time Tracking, and Absence.

The ideal candidate is hands-on in the tenant, operationally disciplined, and an effective people leader who can build structure, manage a global team, and partner across functions.

How you will contribute

  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the BAU (Business As Usual) HRIS team, including coaching, development, and performance feedback.
  • Provide managerial oversight of the GCC India analyst team, ensuring alignment on priorities, quality standards, and service delivery.
  • Establish and manage a tiered support model (L1/L2/L3) with clear ownership, escalation paths, SLA commitments, and performance metrics.
  • Manage production support cases including triage, assignment, caseload monitoring, and root cause resolution for recurring issues.
  • Manage Workday bi-annual releases: coordinate testing with SMEs and business stakeholders, assess new features, and communicate functionality changes.
  • Partner with HR, Recruiting, Benefits, Payroll, Finance, IT, and other teams to support enhancements, defect resolution, and new functionality rollouts.
  • Collaborate with the HRIS Implementation Lead, People Tech Architect Lead, and Integrations team on cross-functional projects as needed.
  • Own BAU process documentation, configuration decisions, and support procedures to reduce knowledge silos and enable team scalability.
  • Maintain knowledge of Workday trends and platform updates through Workday Community, webinars, and other industry forums.
  • Provide regular status updates on in-progress work items and projects to leadership and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of HR technology experience with progressive responsibility, including team leadership. Minimum 3 years of hands-on Workday experience required.
  • Experience managing or overseeing an offshore or globally distributed team.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage SLA frameworks and tiered support models in a complex, high-volume environment.
  • Proven record of managing Workday production support including triage, configuration, and root cause resolution.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks and adjust to shifting priorities while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced, growing organization.
  • Comfortable working across global teams and time zones.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Customer service oriented with a demonstrated desire to deliver an excellent experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, HRIS, Business Administration, IT/IS, MIS, or related field preferred.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel; experience with ITSM or ticketing tools (e.g. ServiceNow, Jira) a plus.
