What does a housing property manager do?

A Housing Property Manager oversees the daily operations of residential properties such as apartment complexes, houses, or housing communities. Their responsibilities include handling tenant relations, collecting rent, coordinating maintenance and repairs, ensuring the property complies with laws and regulations, and managing budgets. They act as the main point of contact between property owners and tenants, aiming to keep properties profitable and well-maintained. Housing Property Managers also market vacant units, screen prospective tenants, and handle lease agreements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a housing property manager?

To succeed as a Housing Property Manager, you need expertise in property management, leasing regulations, budgeting, and often a relevant degree or certification such as CAM or CPM. Familiarity with property management software (e.g., Yardi, AppFolio) and maintenance scheduling systems is also essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you effectively address tenant concerns and manage multiple properties. These abilities ensure efficient operations, tenant satisfaction, and compliance with housing laws, which are critical for property value and reputation.

What are some common challenges housing property managers face when balancing tenant needs and property owner expectations?

Housing Property Managers often serve as the main point of contact between tenants and property owners, which can present challenges when their interests do not align. For example, tenants may request prompt repairs or amenity upgrades, while owners may be focused on cost control and maximizing return on investment. Successful managers must communicate clearly, prioritize urgent issues, and negotiate practical solutions that maintain tenant satisfaction and property value. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential in managing these dynamics and fostering positive relationships with all stakeholders.

Job description

What we do and why we do it

As the leading end-to-end investment platform for single-family rental homes (SFR), our mission is to reinvent the rental housing ecosystem for the benefit of all. We successfully merge our passion for helping investors build wealth through real estate with cutting edge technology that transforms the way they do it.

How it's going (and growing)

With a talented team of 750+ Roofsters, our collaborative, can-do culture is what fuels our growth. In 2022, we closed on our Series E, raising $240 million, and have offices in the Bay Area and New York City. Our growth includes recent acquisitions of Stessa (financial and asset management software), RentPrep (tenant screening and placement service for landlords), and Mynd (property management platform for both Retail and Institutional investors). In 2025, Roofstock took an ownership stake in Casago (short-term rental management services), expanding our platform to support both long-term and short-term rental investment services.

About the Role

The role of the Property Manager is to provide excellent service to our investors. You will become intimately familiar with the unique operating procedures of your portfolio, execute at the highest level and ensure that the portfolio is performing optimally. You are a high performer and will manage the resolution of complex and ever-changing challenges while accurately managing expectations. Adaptability, high attention to detail and impeccable communication are a given. Your portfolio will grow rapidly and across state lines and it's incumbent upon you to exercise extreme ownership in all areas of the business, including leasing, R&M, resident services, and accounting to ensure everything goes smoothly. You will work collaboratively with, and act as a liaison between, the investor and the rest of the Roofstock organization, partnering with other departments and product as needed. This role has the support of the entire Roofstock team and is critical to our growth strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio in accordance with investors' changing goals and objectives
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times to our investors
  • Resolve complex problems as they arise and permanently resolve the underlying issues to prevent them from happening again, all while appropriately managing the expectations of investors
  • Systematically assess, organize, schedule and execute tasks by leveraging proprietary technology and our centralized teams of excellence
  • Proactively create tasks for Roofstock team members and follow up to ensure satisfactory completion
  • Build strong virtual relationships with all other Roofstock departments
  • Enthusiastically embrace innovation by testing software, processes and organizational changes, while providing actionable feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement
  • Ability to discuss and cross-sell Roofstock real estate products
  • You may oversee Onsite Managers, who live on the premise of any property with sixteen or more apartments and perform various tasks at the property
  • Assist investors with the purchase/sale of income properties
  • Serve as a company representative in eviction-related court hearings when required. This includes in-person appearances for contested cases, appeals, or by court or legal request to support case resolution and clarify property management actions

Qualifications

  •  Must have an active Georgia Real Estate License
  •  Bachelor's degree in business or related field, or equivalent experience
  •  3+ years experience in residential or commercial property management, or real estate operations, required
  •  Prior experience working directly with property ownership, a plus
  •  Cost and revenue management experience, highly preferred
  •  Tech savvy and experienced in working in a multitude of property management softwares
  •  Extreme attention to detail
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  •  Self-driven and intrinsically motivated with the ability to prioritize and consistently meet deadlines
  •  Thrives in a fast-paced and startup environment

Travel required
