House Helper information

What is a house helper?

House helpers are individuals employed to assist with various household tasks such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, and sometimes childcare or running errands. They help maintain the cleanliness and organization of a home, and their duties can vary depending on the needs of the employer. House helpers can work full-time, part-time, or on a live-in or live-out basis, and may be hired directly by families or through agencies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a house helper?

To thrive as a House Helper, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in household cleaning and maintenance tasks. Familiarity with cleaning products, household appliances, and sometimes basic cooking or laundry equipment is typically required. Reliability, discretion, and good communication are important soft skills for building trust with employers and managing responsibilities independently. These skills ensure a clean, safe, and efficiently run home environment, meeting the needs and expectations of the household.

What challenges might a house helper face when working in different households?

House Helpers often encounter varying expectations and routines across different households, which can be challenging to adapt to quickly. Each family may have unique preferences for cleaning methods, organization, and privacy, requiring strong communication skills and flexibility. Additionally, time management is important, as balancing multiple tasks—such as cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation—within a set timeframe is a frequent requirement. Building trust with household members and maintaining professionalism is key to long-term success in this role.

What is the difference between House Helper vs Housekeeper?

While both roles involve cleaning and household chores, a House Helper typically provides general assistance with various household tasks, often in smaller or private homes. A Housekeeper usually has a more defined cleaning focus and may work in larger households or hospitality settings. The roles overlap, but the Housekeeper often has more specialized cleaning responsibilities.

About Our Family
We are a busy, creative family of four, including two very active young daughters, ages 2 and 1, and a gentle 11-year-old Irish Doodle who enjoys occasional walks and lots of chin scratches. Our household blends work-from-home, professional schedules, and nurturing young children, so we value someone who can help create structure, maintain calm, and keep our home running smoothly. Mom works from home and values quiet focus time for her creative work, while Dad works largely outside of the home on a typical professional schedule.
Our home reflects our original style, with an art loft and spaces designed to feel warm and welcoming. We love hosting friends and family, ensuring everything is organized and inviting. Weekends are set aside for rest, family, and reflection. We believe in protecting margin in our lives so we can say yes to opportunities, help others, and avoid being overscheduled.
We are a values-driven family that places a strong emphasis on kindness, integrity, gratitude, and respect. We strive to create a home environment centered on meaningful connections, personal responsibility, and treating others with compassion. We're looking for someone who can take the mental load off meal planning, laundry, and household systems so we can focus on what matters most: our family, our work, and our well-being.
Who You Are
You're highly organized, proactive, and comfortable making independent decisions without needing constant direction. You see what needs to be done and take initiative to solve problems resourcefully. You thrive on creating and maintaining systems, and you communicate openly when plans change. You're respectful, kind, and comfortable working in a home where innovation and flexibility are valued. You also enjoy creative personalities and humor. You work well with others, especially our full-time nanny, and appreciate a household that runs smoothly but warmly. You're a dog lover, somewhat tech savvy, and you understand that taking the mental load off a family means anticipating needs, not just responding to requests.
While our full-time nanny provides the primary childcare, this role focuses on household management, meal preparation, organization, and supporting the overall functioning of the home. We are looking for someone who truly enjoys being in the kitchen and takes pride in creating nutritious, delicious meals for a busy family. Cooking and meal preparation will be a primary focus of this position, so we're seeking someone who can confidently plan, prep, and execute meals with ease. The ideal candidate is comfortable following recipes, enjoys trying new dishes, and can keep the kitchen organized and running smoothly. From preparing daily family meals to stocking ingredients, managing meal prep, and accommodating dietary needs, this person will play an important role in supporting the family's day-to-day life through thoughtful and consistent meal preparation.
Beyond the kitchen, you will make a meaningful contribution by keeping the household running efficiently, maintaining organizational systems that support family life, and helping create more time and mental space for creativity, connection, and the opportunities that matter most.
Key Responsibilities
Meal Support
  • Plan and prepare 3-4 dinners per week that are fully ready to heat up and eat. Make enough for two days of leftovers
  • Prepare daily breakfasts and lunches for the entire family
  • Manage all grocery shopping and maintain a well-stocked kitchen
  • Navigate complex food allergies: gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, sesame-free, and refined sugar-free (in various combinations for different family members)
  • Batch cook and maintain a well-organized freezer with clearly labeled items, including allergy-friendly options
  • Clearly label all food items with allergen information
  • Clean and maintain the entire kitchen after cooking
  • Take full ownership of meal planning based on what's available - no need to ask what to make, just run with it
Laundry & Linens
  • Wash, fold, organize, and put away all family laundry
  • Handle any ironing or special garment care as needed
  • Rotate linens and maintain the laundry area
Household Organization & Maintenance
  • Create, maintain and adapt to household organization systems throughout the home
  • Perform daily resets of common areas
  • Prep the house before the bi-weekly cleaning service arrives
  • Light tidying: dishes, surfaces, vacuuming high-traffic areas
  • Organize storage areas and implement seasonal swaps for décor
  • Manage art loft organization, with input from the nanny
  • Prepare and coordinate donation drop-offs
  • Oversee Event/Holiday/Guest Prep
Inventory & Errands
  • Monitor and restock pantry, fridge, and household supplies
  • Adjust auto-ship subscriptions as needed
  • Reorder medications and pet supplies
  • Handle returns, gift shopping, and package management
  • Break down Amazon boxes
Vehicle Upkeep
  • Schedule regular vehicle maintenance
  • Coordinate mobile detailing service
  • Ensure family vehicles are fueled and clean
  • Track registration and insurance
Pet Care
  • Occasional feeding/walking the dog
  • Manage vet/grooming scheduling
  • Administer medications
  • Maintain pet supplies
  • Occasional dog sitting
Family Support
  • Provide occasional emergency backup childcare during urgent situations
  • Provide childcare coverage during the nanny's annual month-long travel
  • Occasional evening babysitting as needed
  • Coordinate closely with the nanny on any child-related tasks and systems
  • Handle child-related errands such as medication pickup
Deep Cleaning & Special Projects
  • Occasional deep cleaning tasks: fridge, oven, baseboards
  • Maintain mudroom and entryway areas
  • Maintain outdoor spaces: manage outdoor cushions, clear pine needles
  • Assist in wrapping presents - passionate about gorgeous presents for showers, birthdays, and holidays
Vendor & Property Oversight
  • Research and coordinate quotes for home repairs and services
  • Oversee cleaners and other contractors as needed
