Travel Potential: 75–100% (This is a traveling position that includes per diem and full benefits)

Job Summary:

As the Equipment Operator, you will ultimately be responsible for operating heavy equipment, supporting underground utility construction activities, and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently. You will operate, inspect, and maintain heavy machinery while supporting field crews in the installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure. As the Equipment Operator, your customers are internal construction teams, project managers, and telecommunications clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and dependable project execution.

Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

  • Operate heavy equipment in accordance with company safety policies and procedures
  • Load and unload heavy equipment from trucks and trailers
  • Perform daily inspections, maintenance, and documentation for assigned equipment
  • Load, haul, set up, and safely operate heavy equipment at project sites
  • Operate heavy equipment around active underground utilities while avoiding utility strikes
  • Read utility locate markings and develop safe excavation plans before beginning work
  • Operate asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, bore machines, and other heavy equipment as assigned
  • Assist with conduit placement in open trenches
  • Proof conduits prior to installation
  • Pothole existing utilities
  • Assist with forming and pouring concrete
  • Assist with asphalt placement and restoration activities
  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment to ensure safe operation
  • Communicate daily with supervisors regarding project progress and equipment status
  • Adhere to all company policies, OSHA requirements, ANSI standards, and safety procedures
  • Work overtime and weekends as business needs require
  • Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs

Required Qualifications:

Education, Licensing, and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid driver's license
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A required
  • DOT Medical Card required

Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment around active underground utilities
  • Experience using underground utility locating systems
  • Experience operating asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, bore machines, and similar heavy equipment
  • Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment preferred
  • Experience with basic shoring methods preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment in active utility environments
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and company safety standards
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to identify underground utilities and safely excavate around existing infrastructure
  • Ability to inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot assigned equipment
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work overtime as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting underground telecommunications or utility construction
  • Experience operating multiple types of heavy construction equipment
  • Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment
  • Knowledge of trench safety, excavation practices, and shoring systems

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, push, pull, twist, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, moving machinery, and active utility construction
  • Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of surrounding personnel and equipment
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and other required safety gear
  • Ability to travel extensively and work overtime or weekends as business needs require
