What is an Hourly Software Developer job?

An Hourly Software Developer is a software professional who works and gets paid based on the number of hours they contribute to a project instead of a fixed salary. These developers are often hired for freelance, contract, or temporary positions to assist with specific development tasks. They may work on designing, coding, testing, or maintaining software solutions for businesses. Hourly developers offer flexibility for both employers and workers, making it easier to scale development efforts as needed. This type of role is common in remote and gig-based work environments.

What does a typical work schedule look like for an Hourly Software Developer?

Hourly Software Developers often have flexible schedules, with hours that can range from set shifts to project-based timelines, depending on employer or client needs. In many cases, developers may work remotely, collaborating with team members through online platforms and attending scheduled meetings or check-ins. The work structure encourages regular progress updates and communication to ensure milestones are met efficiently. This hourly model can provide work-life balance and adaptability, while still requiring accountability and consistent productivity to meet project deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hourly Software Developer position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Hourly Software Developer, you should have strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and relevant education or proven experience in the field. Familiarity with common frameworks, code repositories (such as Git), and knowledge of industry-standard languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript are routinely expected. Effective time management, adaptability, and clear communication help developers succeed in dynamic work environments and coordinate with project stakeholders. These skills ensure developers can deliver quality work efficiently and reliably, which is critical for roles with hourly accountability.

Will AI replace coders by 2040?

Hourly software developers perform coding tasks that AI tools can assist with but are unlikely to fully replace by 2040. AI can automate repetitive coding and testing, but human oversight, problem-solving, and creativity remain essential in software development. Developers will need to adapt by learning new tools and skills to work alongside AI systems.

Description

Role: Software Engineer

Department: Automation

Location: Erlanger, KY, Atlanta, GA or Westfield, IN

As a Software Engineer, you will support the configuration and implementation of Invar's in-house Warehouse System, a software platform used to control and optimize warehouse operations. Invar is now part of Storage Solutions, and this role sits within Storage Solutions while remaining deeply focused on Invar's products, technology, and customer projects.

The Warehouse System is deployed in environments ranging from simple RF/manual workflows to highly automated facilities utilizing conveyors, cranes, palletizers, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robotic arms, and other advanced material handling systems.

You will receive mentorship and training to learn the system architecture and apply it to real customer projects. This includes developing features in C#/.NET, configuring workflows, integrating with equipment and host systems, and helping test solutions prior to deployment.

Software Engineers work closely with Lead Engineers throughout the full project lifecycle, including requirements clarification, development, and testing, as well as participation in site installation, user training, and post-go-live support. Over time, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of project workstreams as your knowledge and skills grow.

No background in warehouse automation is required; full training is provided. Curiosity, problem-solving, and a willingness to learn are key to success.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Software Development & Configuration

  • Support the development and configuration of our Warehouse System using C#/.NET technologies
  • Assist with building and customizing workflows, features, and integrations based on customer requirements
  • Contribute to testing and validation of software solutions prior to deployment

Project & Customer Support

  • Work closely with senior developers throughout the project lifecycle, including requirements clarification, development, and testing
  • Participate in site installations, user training, and post-go-live support as needed
  • Engage with customers during project implementation to ensure solutions meet operational goals

Learning & Growth

  • Learn internal system architecture, development standards, and best practices through hands-on project work
  • Gradually take ownership of defined project workstreams as skills and experience develop
  • Demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, and accountability in day-to-day responsibilities

DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT & TOOLS:

  • Development of .NET applications using .NET Framework 4.7 and .NET 8
  • C# development using Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Expression Blend
  • SQL database development using Microsoft SQL Server (Standard and Enterprise)
  • Design and development of user interfaces for client-facing applications
  • Use of Azure DevOps for sprint planning, source control, collaboration, and build/deployment pipelines
  • Work within an Agile team of experienced software developers

KNOWLEGDE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Exposure to object-oriented programming languages such as C#, Java, or C++ (C# experience not required; training provided)
  • Strong interest in software development and technical problem-solving
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn new technologies and apply feedback quickly
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Self-motivated with a positive, growth-oriented mindset

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Up to 25% travel annually, including potential international travel
  • Participation in a rotating 24/7 support schedule after completing at least one full project lifecycle and required on-call training
  • Hybrid, in-office, or remote work arrangements depending on project needs and training requirements
