Job description

Seamstress / Tailor – Part-Time with Fast Growth Potential if Desired

Janie’s Tailoring is seeking a dependable Seamstress / Tailor to join our established growing alteration shop in Yorktown, Virginia.

An experienced alteration professional who can work independently is preferred. However, we are also willing to train the right person who has strong basic sewing skills, a good understanding of garment construction, and a genuine interest in developing professional tailoring abilities.

This opportunity may be especially well suited for someone returning to the workforce, seeking steady part-time work, or looking to turn years of personal sewing experience into a professional skill.

The position will begin part-time, with the potential to grow into a full-time role, if desired, as the employee’s abilities and the needs of the business develop.

The employee will initially receive hourly pay during a training and evaluation period. After demonstrating consistent quality, efficiency, dependability, and the ability to complete work independently, there may be an opportunity to transition to a production-based compensation plan. This structure can provide strong earning potential for a skilled and productive tailor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clothing alterations and repairs under the direction of the Store Manager.
  • Complete hems, seam repairs, waist adjustments, sleeve alterations, zipper replacements, and other common alterations.

  • Take accurate body and garment measurements.
  • Pin and mark garments for alterations.
  • Participate in customer fittings as experience allows.
  • Use commercial sewing machines, sergers, pressing equipment, and hand-sewing techniques.
  • Inspect completed garments for fit, appearance, accuracy, and workmanship.
  • Complete assignments within established deadlines.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with customers and coworkers.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized sewing and fitting area.
  • Learn additional alteration and tailoring techniques through hands-on training.

Qualifications

Applicants do not need to possess every skill listed below. Training will be provided to a candidate who demonstrates good sewing ability, attention to detail, dependability, and a willingness to learn.

  • Basic to advanced sewing skills.

  • Familiarity with sewing machines and common sewing tools.
  • Ability to follow instructions and learn new techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Dependable attendance and time-management skills.
  • Ability to effectively muti-task
  • Good communication and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to work carefully and meet established deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in tailoring, clothing alterations, sewing, or garment repair.
  • Ability to independently perform common alterations.
  • Experience conducting customer fittings and taking measurements.
  • Experience working with formalwear, bridal garments, suits, uniforms, or specialty fabrics.
  • Experience using commercial or industrial sewing machines.
  • Experience in clothing de-construction to perform complex alterations

Training and Development

Janie’s Tailoring will provide hands-on training based on the employee’s existing experience and abilities.

A candidate with strong home-sewing experience may be considered even without previous professional tailoring employment. The ideal candidate will be patient, careful, dependable, receptive to instruction, and interested in developing long-term alteration and tailoring skills.

Training may include:

  • Proper garment measuring, pinning, and marking
  • Common alteration techniques
  • Customer fitting procedures

  • Transition to production-based compensation is not automatic and will depend on performance and business needs.
  • Position begins part-time with the potential to become full-time.
  • Opportunities for additional responsibility and advancement as skills develop and the business grows.

Schedule

  • Flexible schedule options
  • Additional hours may become available over time.
