As of Aug 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for hourly scrum master in the United States is $58.02, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49.52 and $66.11 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an hourly Scrum Master?

Hourly Scrum Masters are professionals who facilitate Scrum practices and Agile methodologies for teams on an hourly contract basis, rather than as full-time or salaried employees. They guide teams through Scrum ceremonies like daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, ensuring Agile principles are upheld. This flexible arrangement is often used by organizations that need Scrum expertise for specific projects or limited periods, making it a cost-effective solution for managing workflows and fostering team collaboration. Hourly Scrum Masters may work with multiple organizations or teams simultaneously, providing targeted support as needed.

What is the difference between Hourly Scrum Master vs Part-Time Scrum Master?

AspectHourly Scrum MasterPart-Time Scrum Master
Work SchedulePaid by the hour, flexible hoursWorks fewer hours per week, scheduled sessions
CertificationsScrum Master certifications (CSM, PSM)Same certifications as hourly Scrum Master
Work EnvironmentAgile teams, project-basedAgile teams, often within organizations
Usage in IndustryFreelance or contract rolesPart-time employment within companies

The main difference is that an Hourly Scrum Master is typically a freelance or contract worker paid by the hour, offering flexible scheduling. A Part-Time Scrum Master usually works fewer hours within a company, often on a set schedule. Both roles require similar certifications and work in agile environments, but their employment arrangements differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, Scrum frameworks, and typically a certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana is commonly required to facilitate sprints and track progress. Excellent communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills help a Scrum Master guide teams and foster collaboration. These skills ensure effective team performance, timely delivery of project goals, and continuous improvement within Agile environments.

Are there part-time hourly Scrum Master jobs?

Part-time hourly Scrum Master jobs are available and often involve flexible schedules, allowing professionals to work on specific projects or for multiple clients. These roles typically require strong knowledge of Agile practices, certifications like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), and effective remote communication skills. Availability depends on the employer and project needs, but part-time positions are common in consulting firms and organizations seeking flexible Agile support.

How does an hourly Scrum Master balance facilitating Agile ceremonies with other ad-hoc team needs?

As an hourly Scrum Master, you'll typically focus on facilitating core Agile ceremonies—such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives—within your scheduled hours. However, you'll also need to be responsive to the team's ongoing needs, like removing impediments and coaching members on Agile best practices. Time management and clear communication are essential, as you may need to prioritize tasks and sometimes handle urgent issues outside of planned meetings. Building strong relationships and setting expectations with both the team and stakeholders will help you manage your responsibilities effectively within your hourly schedule.
