Vermont Law and Graduate School is committed to cultivating and preserving a culture of inclusion and connectedness. We grow and learn better together with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. In recruiting for faculty and staff, we seek unique backgrounds to enrich and challenge our community.

Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS), a national leader in legal writing, environmental law, and restorative justice, invites applications for one Assistant/Associate/Professor of Legal Writing to teach in the Online Hybrid JD program. This position is fully remote. Successful candidates must hold an ABA-accredited J.D. Applicants must also have legal work experience, demonstrated teaching experience, and proven research and writing ability. Experience with residential and/or online teaching is required. Junior and senior-level lateral candidates will be considered. The position starts July 2027.

Students at VLGS take three required legal writing courses. Legal Research and Writing and Legal Writing II: Theory and Practice span the first year. The courses offer students an immersive, structured introduction to systems of American law, legal organization, objective and persuasive writing, and oral communication. The capstone course is Appellate Advocacy, in which students brief and argue a case currently pending before the United States Supreme Court. Professors in the program select a pending case based on their interest in the subject matter.ย

The successful candidate will teach two synchronous online sections of Legal Writing classes per semester. ย Sections typically have approximately 20 students. The position is almost entirely remote. The successful candidate can teach classes from any location, except for a single three-day residency held in Burlington, Vermont, during which two Legal Research and Writing sessions will be held. VLGS covers the cost of travel and accommodations for the Residency. In addition to teaching, remote faculty provide service to VLGS and engage with other professionals and the public to contribute to the intellectual exchange of ideas, improve the law, and educate the public about the law, with an eye towards social justice. Remote faculty members are expected to serve on committees, attend virtual campus events, and be fully engaged in the mission of the school.ย

Requirements

Application Requirements:

Applicants must complete an online application and electronically submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a writing sample, and (4) the names and contact information of three references. Please visit https://www.vermontlaw.edu/employment to apply directly. ย VLGS will only contact references for finalists or with the candidate's permission. VLGS strongly encourages applications from those who would bring increased diversity to our community. Direct inquiries about the positions to Faculty Appointments Committee Chair, Anna Connolly at aconnolly@vermontlaw.edu.ย
