Job description

New York Edge (NYE) is the largest provider of school-based afterschool and summer programming in New York City, serving thousands of students annually across all five boroughs and Long Island. Our mission is to help young people discover their potential by providing programs that support academic achievement, social-emotional development, and leadership growth. Through deep partnerships with schools, communities, and city agencies, we deliver high-quality experiences that address the needs of the whole child and build pathways to lifelong success.


NYE also serves as a leading Community-Based Organization (CBO) in the NYC Community Schools initiative, partnering with school leadership to coordinate integrated supports such as expanded learning, family engagement, and wellness services to ensure students and families have access to comprehensive school-based resources.


Work Schedule:

3 hours per day -10 hours per week.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Content Specialist is a site-based program quality and instructional coaching role responsible for supporting the implementation of program content and ensuring alignment with DYCD, New York Edge, and site expectations. Working under the supervision of the Afterschool Program Director and in partnership with the Curriculum Instructional Technology (CIT) team, the Content Specialist provides coaching, training, observation, and professional development to program staff to promote high-quality programming.

Content Specialists may be assigned to up to three COMPASS program sites within a regional portfolio and are required to provide a minimum of nine hours of service per week at each assigned site. Responsibilities include observing activities, coaching staff, reviewing lesson plans, delivering professional development, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

The role receives ongoing training and support from both the Afterschool Program Director and the CIT team and is part of a citywide network dedicated to ensuring all New York Edge students have access to high-quality learning experiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct Learning Walks, classroom observations, and instructional coaching to support high-quality programming and staff development.
  • Provide feedback, model effective instructional practices, and support staff in creating engaging, inclusive, and youth-centered learning experiences.
  • Conduct formal and informal observations using NYE and DYCD-aligned tools; facilitate pre- and post-observation meetings; maintain coaching records; and complete required observation reports.
  • Review lesson plans and support staff in implementing NYE-approved curricula and utilizing curriculum resources effectively.
  • Deliver and support professional development activities based on program needs and observation data.
  • Assist with the recruitment, interview, selection, and onboarding of instructional staff.
  • Monitor program quality, curriculum implementation, staff performance, and student engagement; communicate concerns and recommendations to site leadership and the Curriculum and Instruction Department.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions and submit all required reports and deliverables by established deadlines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, a relevant content area, Youth Development, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching, facilitating, or supporting K-8 students in educational, afterschool, or youth development settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide constructive, strengths-based coaching and feedback.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive instructional practices and youth-centered facilitation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.

PREFERRED

  • Experience with instructional coaching, teacher mentoring, or adult professional development.
  • Familiarity with DYCD/COMPASS observation and quality assessment frameworks.
  • Experience in afterschool or youth development programs.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Slides).
