Job description

The Commonwealth, Richmond’s oldest and newest boutique hotel, is searching for an experienced, motivated and dynamic Operations Manager.  Managed by SMI Hotel Group and affiliated with Preferred Hotels & Resorts, The Commonwealth is a 59 suite historic property located on Capitol Square, directly across from the Virginia State Capitol.  With original artwork painted by some of Richmond’s most acclaimed mural artists, and tattoos on the door of every guest suite (RVA ranks as the #3 most tattooed city in America!), we strive to deliver a uniquely Richmond experience. Featuring Rueger’s, our restaurant and bar that pays homage to the original eatery that opened on the same site in 1846, and 3,000 square feet of modern, flexible event space, The Commonwealth offers something for everyone. 

The purpose of the Operations Manager is to be a proactive representative of the hotel, who is aimed at creating an environment that achieves the highest possible guest satisfaction. Overall responsibilities for the operations manager will include overseeing front desk operations as well as housekeeping, engineering, and food and beverage. 

Responsibilities of the Operations Manager include but not limited to:

  • Communicate with the front desk and all other departments to ensure seamless operation
  • Support the GM to effectively manage wages and controllable expenses 
  • Ensure the cleanliness and functionality of the guest rooms and the entire building
  • Oversee the housekeeping department ensuring that it is run and operating effectively on a daily basis
  • Establish and maintain open, collaborative relationships with direct reports and entire team
  • Inspire team members to ensure that superior guest service is consistent. Empower team members to extend appropriate service recovery to resolve guest complaints in a timely manner
  • Ensure policies are administered fairly and consistently and that team member performance is evaluated and recognized where appropriate
  • Serve as a guest advocate for the property. Pulls together resources to resolve guest and operational issues and impact results
  • Must be highly visible and interface with customers on a regular basis to obtain feedback on quality of product, service levels, and overall satisfaction
  • Analyze service issues and identifies trends
  • Ensure property is a safe and secure for guests and team members
