The Marvin Group is a Strategic Partner for Global Alternate Mission Equipment and Sustainment
The Marvin Group, a leading defense contractor, plays a crucial role in the development and manufacturing of various systems for military aerospace and vehicles. Based in Southern California near the Los Angeles International Airport, The Marvin Group consists of Marvin Engineering (MEC), Marvin Test Solutions (MTS) and Marvin Land Systems (MLS).  Marvin Engineering designs and produces military Alternate Mission Equipment.  Marvin Test Solutions designs and manufactures armament Test Equipment. Marvin Land Systems specializes in the design and build of power and thermal management systems. For over 60 years we have maintained "A Tradition of Excellence", serving as a trusted source for our unwavering commitment to supporting all branches of the Department of Defense and our global allies. Our collaboration extends across a diverse array of programs and platforms, including major military prime contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Buyer IV supports Indirect Procurement and is responsible for purchases that support day-to-day operations (instead of direct material purchases for production). Indirect Procurement means the purchase of software licenses, IT infrastructure, travel, construction, leases, a wide variety of services (temps, maintenance, landscaping, cafeteria, company benefits, etc.) and capital equipment (usually large machining or quality measurement equipment but could include things like forklifts or other vehicles). These are things we need to buy that do not go into the products we manufacture. This role ensures these "indirect" items are procured efficiently, cost-effectively, and in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. Robust negotiation, independent problem-solving, the ability to work through ambiguity to develop solutions, and clear and concise communication are all critical for this role.

Marvin Engineering is growing, and our indirect procurement team needs to develop processes and expertise in all of the areas described above. The successful candidate will already have robust experience in most, if not all, of these areas. We want to leverage this experience to enable fast expansion while utilizing best practices in the industry.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Review Purchase Requests (PRs), source qualified vendors, collaborate with cross-functional customers, ensure competitive bidding, conduct analysis, ensure compliance, and negotiate best value.
  2. Develop new processes and procedures, and recommend tools and resources, for new indirect procurement activities to come under the control of the indirect procurement department.
  3. Draft and ensure approvals of purchase orders.
  4. Ensure appropriate review and negotiate contracts for indirect procurement.
  5. Track and ensure on-time delivery, completion of milestones, or activation of software.
  6. Ensure appropriate levels of support to cross-functional customers.
  7. Manage relationships and resolve disputes with vendors.

 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum of 5 years prior experience as a buyer or similar purchasing capacity, OR an AA/AS degree or higher with 2 years of experience in either a purchasing or sales capacity where negotiation was required.
  • Strong ability to work independently to solve complex problems.
  • Robust negotiations skills with a history of success.
  • Purchasing experience in 3 or more of the following areas:
    • (A) Corporate travel expenses (Hotel, airline, car rental, group events with more than 100 people, especially using third party travel services or software);
    • (B) Software licenses, IT infrastructure or computer hardware,
    • (C) Facilities expenses (Landscaping services, tree-trimming, on-site cafeterias, food service, or vending machines, uniform services, third party bathroom supplies, cleaning services);
    • (D) Capital Equipment (Large machinery (especially CNC Mills and lathes), quality measurement equipment, forklifts, and other vehicles; and
    • (E) Temp services and HR Benefits;
    • (F) Construction and leases; OR
    • (G) Other indirect purchases valued at greater than $50,000.   
  • Ability to analyze spending, identify trends, and create cost-saving recommendations
  • Strong experience with Excel or another tool for data analysis.  
  • Strong experience with PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Experience using purchasing software. Note that SAP experience is a plus, but not required
  • Self-starter and capable of working independently to resolve issues or concisely recommend robust plans of action for leadership.
  • Collaborative with cross-functional customers
  • Sound business decisions and common sense.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate with General Contractors. 
  • Oversee the PO/project progress and payment process of contractor.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs

  • On-site, Inglewood, California
  • Medium-to-large, fast-paced office environment
  • Noise level is typically moderate
  • Occasional exposure to onsite construction or facility environments

COMPENSATION RANGE:

Salary Range (Inglewood only): $71,304 - $110,000 annually. Salary is based on skills, experience, and education.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

May include minimal local domestic travel of <5%
