Pastoral Services assists the patient, family, and personnel in meeting their spiritual, social, and emotional needs during a time of illness, injury or stress and will minister to all persons, regardless of their belief system. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.Position Details:
The Chaplain II provides spiritual, emotional, and pastoral care to patients, families, and co-workers across a variety of healthcare settings. As a valued member of the interdisciplinary care team, this role offers compassionate support during times of illness, crisis, trauma, grief, and end-of-life care while respecting the diverse spiritual, cultural, and religious beliefs of those served.
The ideal candidate is a compassionate, collaborative professional who can provide meaningful spiritual care, navigate complex situations with sensitivity, and foster healing and hope for patients, families, and staff.
Key Responsibilities- Assess spiritual and emotional needs and provide pastoral care to patients, families, and staff.
- Support individuals experiencing trauma, crisis, grief, end-of-life concerns, and other complex healthcare challenges.
- Respond to urgent spiritual care needs while effectively managing multiple priorities.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to support holistic patient care.
- Assist visiting clergy and facilitate connections with faith communities as requested.
- Plan and participate in religious observances, memorial services, and spiritual events that support patients, families, and staff.
- Develop and provide specialized pastoral services within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Offer education related to spirituality, coping, resilience, and the connection between spiritual well-being and health outcomes.
- Provide support and debriefing for staff following difficult patient situations or major events.
- Maintain accurate documentation of pastoral services and patient interactions in accordance with organizational standards.
- Participate in department initiatives, quality improvement activities, and continuing education opportunities.
- Promote an environment of religious freedom, inclusivity, and respect for diverse beliefs and backgrounds.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education
- Master's degree or master's-level coursework in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity, or a related field.
- Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
Required Experience
- Minimum of one year of healthcare chaplaincy experience, including CPE experience.
Required Certification
- Eligible for certification or actively pursuing Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) certification through an approved certifying organization.
- Four units of CPE recognized by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC).
- Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) certification through APC or NACC.
- Three or more years of chaplaincy experience.
- Experience in a specialty practice area.
- Experience providing education or presentations to physicians, clinicians, and healthcare teams.
- Additional language skills relevant to the populations served.
- Demonstrated compassion, empathy, and respect for the dignity of every individual.
- Strong communication, active listening, and interpersonal relationship skills.
- Ability to provide spiritual care across diverse faith traditions, belief systems, and cultural backgrounds.
- Knowledge of pastoral theology, spirituality, medical ethics, grief support, crisis intervention, and end-of-life care.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Skilled in managing emotionally challenging situations with professionalism, sensitivity, and resilience.
- Ability to advocate for patients, families, and co-workers when appropriate.
- Proficiency with electronic documentation systems, communication technologies, and standard computer applications.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Commitment to ongoing spiritual, professional, and personal growth.
