What does a Hiring OPT Student Mechanical Engineer do?

A Hiring OPT Student Mechanical Engineer is an international student in the U.S. on Optional Practical Training (OPT), typically after completing a degree in mechanical engineering, who is seeking or has obtained a job in the field. Their responsibilities may include assisting with the design, analysis, and testing of mechanical systems, working with CAD software, and supporting engineering teams on various projects. These roles provide practical work experience relevant to their studies and help them build skills for future career advancement. Employers hiring OPT students must comply with specific visa and reporting requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hiring OPT Student Mechanical Engineer?

To excel as a Hiring OPT Student Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid grounding in mechanical engineering principles, analytical problem-solving abilities, and a relevant engineering degree, often enhanced by participation in the OPT program. Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and experience with simulation tools like ANSYS, are highly valued, along with any relevant internships or certification. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for bridging academic knowledge with practical workplace demands. These skills and qualities ensure effective contribution to engineering projects, smooth integration into diverse teams, and successful adaptation to real-world industry challenges.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Hiring OPT Student Mechanical Engineer expect to work on?

As an OPT Student Mechanical Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on and collaborative projects such as designing mechanical components, performing analysis using CAD software, and assisting with prototype development and testing. Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Wavetronix is seeking an experienced, full-time Mechanical Engineer to drive the mechanical design, implementation, and validation of our industrial products. In this role, you will work alongside a multidisciplinary development team to take designs all the way from initial concept to production. Your focus will be on delivering reliable hardware optimized for environmental protection and thermal performance. This role requires an engineer skilled in designing parts using a diverse range of manufacturing processes.

The successful candidate will have the ability and desire to complete the following goals:

Within 90 Days:

  • Develop an understanding of current Wavetronix products and assigned projects.
  • Demonstrate core technical proficiencies by working closely with existing team members on active tasks.
  • Adopt the standard engineering tools, workflows, and documentation processes used by the team.

Year 1:

  • Become a major team contributor to the development of mechanical designs.
  • Drive portions of product development projects from concept through release.
  • Exercise sound engineering judgment to evaluate technical tradeoffs, analyze alternative solutions, and solve complex hardware problems.
  • Demonstrate skill at working with team members and collaborating with other teams that are working on related projects.

Beyond Year 1:

  • Develop a deep understanding of Wavetronix products.
  • Propose and implement mechanical design improvements that enhance product performance, reliability, manufacturability, and quality.
  • Provide technical reviews and informal mentorship to less experienced team members.
  • Align mechanical design efforts with the long-term vision for future Wavetronix product development.

Required Experience:

  • Education: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • Experience: 5+ years of mechanical design for electronics or industrial products.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in 3D CAD, simulation, mechanical assemblies, 2D drawings, and GD&T.
  • Manufacturing (DFM): Design for injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, die casting, extrusions, tooling, material selection, assembly efficiency, cost, quality, and scalability.
  • Design Focus: Electronic enclosures, mounting systems, thermal management (heat sinks, airflow, heating elements, simulation), and environmental protection (IP-rated sealing, gasketing, weatherproofing).
  • Project Lifecycle: Experience driving mechanical designs through the full lifecycle, from concept to production.
  • Testing & Analysis: Hands-on prototyping, mechanical assembly, physical testing, and failure analysis.
  • Core Attributes: Strong ownership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Desired Experience:

  • Self-Leadership: Owning product development projects from concept to release.
  • Reliability & Stress Testing: Fixturing, pull testing, drop testing, environmental/thermal validation, and build-issue resolution.
  • Design Compliance: Experience with shock, vibration, mounting systems, and regulatory standards (CE, UL, IP, etc.).
  • Product Release: Manufacturing release support and driving manufacturability improvements.
