As of Jul 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry level research scientist mechanical engineering in the United States is $106,012.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $104,000.00 and $104,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can mechanical engineers work in R&D?

Yes, mechanical engineers often work in research and development (R&D) roles, where they design, analyze, and test new products, materials, and technologies. R&D positions typically require strong problem-solving skills, proficiency with CAD software, and knowledge of materials science and engineering principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Research Scientist in Mechanical Engineering, and why are they important?

To excel as an Entry Level Research Scientist in Mechanical Engineering, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, data analysis, and experimental design, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like ANSYS or MATLAB, as well as laboratory instrumentation and CAD software, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies ensure accurate research outcomes, efficient project collaboration, and meaningful contributions to innovative engineering solutions.

Can you make $200,000 a year as a mechanical engineer?

Entry-level research scientists in mechanical engineering typically earn lower salaries, with most starting salaries ranging from $60,000 to $80,000 annually. Achieving a $200,000 salary generally requires extensive experience, advanced skills, management roles, or working in specialized industries such as aerospace or energy, often beyond entry-level positions.

What are some common challenges an Entry Level Research Scientist in Mechanical Engineering might face during their first year?

As an Entry Level Research Scientist in Mechanical Engineering, you may encounter challenges such as adapting to new laboratory protocols, mastering specialized research equipment, and managing multiple projects simultaneously. Collaborating with senior researchers and cross-disciplinary teams requires effective communication and a willingness to learn from feedback. Additionally, balancing hands-on experimentation with data analysis and documentation is crucial for success and professional growth in this role.

What does an Entry Level Research Scientist in Mechanical Engineering do?

An Entry Level Research Scientist in Mechanical Engineering typically assists with designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments related to mechanical systems, materials, or processes. They may work on developing prototypes, testing new materials, or improving existing technologies under the supervision of senior scientists or engineers. Their responsibilities often include data collection, report writing, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. This role is ideal for recent graduates who are looking to apply their engineering knowledge to innovative research projects.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, often with advanced skills, certifications, and leadership roles. Mechanical engineers at the entry level typically do not reach this salary level, but senior engineers or those in executive positions may do so with extensive experience and responsibilities.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most entry-level research scientists in mechanical engineering earn significantly less, some senior engineers or specialized consultants with extensive experience, advanced skills, or leadership roles can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in high-paying industries like aerospace, defense, or energy. Achieving this level typically requires advanced degrees, certifications, and a strong track record of innovation or management responsibility.

Job no: 538122
Work type: Non-Tenure-Track Faculty
Location: Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
Categories: Grant or Research Administration, Engineering, Physical/Mathematical Sciences
Department:19020000 - EG-MECHANICAL - AEROSPACE ENG
Classification Title:
RES AST SCTST
Classification Minimum Requirements:
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Chemical engineering, or a closely related field e.g., nanoscale transport phenomena.
Job Description:
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE) at the University of Florida is soliciting applications for a full-time, nine-month, time-limited, non-tenure-track research assistant scientist position in the Kidambi Research Group - https://pirankidambi.wixsite.com/kidambiresearchgroup
We are looking to add a highly motivated and enthusiastic assistant research scientist with a can-do attitude, a strong passion for research and engineering excellence to our growing inter-disciplinary team comprising of Mechanical, Chemical, Material Science, and Electrical Engineers, as well as Applied Physicists.
The group conducts fundamental research on nanoscale mass-transport by leveraging the convergence between i) in-situ metrology, ii) bottom-up synthesis of nanostructures, and iii) process engineering for energy and healthcare applications. Specifically, we leverage atomically thin (2D) materials as ideal model systems to probe nanoscale mass transport at the extreme limits of length scales.
The successful candidate would conduct experimental research, prepare detailed scientific reports, and publish papers in top tier peer reviewed international journals. Specific focus areas are on understanding highly selective transport of sub-atomic/atomic/molecular species at the extremes of length-scales, fundamental insights into the mechanisms governing bottom-up synthesis of nanostuctured materials for atomic-scale control to enable rapid and highly selective transport, and development of strategies to realize functional devices to enable practical applications.
The candidate is expected to actively identify, contribute towards data curation, writing, and submission of federal/state/foundation funding grant applications with the eventual goal of moving towards principal investigator status on grants. Candidate is also expected to provide some level of day-to-day supervision for undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory as well as work with academic/industrial collaborators.
