What is a HiL engineer?

A HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, and validating embedded control systems using HIL simulation techniques. They design and implement test environments that simulate real-world conditions for automotive, aerospace, or industrial applications. HIL Engineers work with simulation models, hardware components, and software tools to ensure that control systems function correctly before deployment. Their role helps reduce development costs and improve system reliability by identifying issues early in the design process.

What does a HiL engineer do?

As a HiL Engineer, a typical day involves developing and maintaining simulation environments, executing test plans for embedded control units, and analyzing test results to identify and troubleshoot system issues. You’ll frequently collaborate with software and hardware engineers, providing feedback and working together to resolve integration challenges. The role often includes scripting automation, updating HiL platforms, and participating in review meetings to ensure alignment with project requirements. Over time, HiL Engineers gain deeper knowledge of system architectures and testing methodologies, opening paths to lead engineer or technical specialist positions. This dynamic work environment offers opportunities to work on innovative products and expand your expertise in automotive or industrial system validation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HiL engineer?

To excel as a HiL Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechatronics engineering, proficiency in control systems and embedded software testing, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation platforms like dSPACE, NI (National Instruments), or Vector, as well as knowledge of tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating in cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure reliable system validation, streamlined error diagnosis, and efficient interaction in fast-paced automotive or industrial development environments.

Job description

Job Description
Description:
As a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer within General Motors' AV Core Infrastructure team, you will design, build, and maintain advanced HIL systems that accelerate validation of embedded controllers and perception systems across next-generation vehicles. You'll bridge mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines to deliver scalable, reliable, and maintainable test infrastructure enabling data-driven development of automated driving features.
You will collaborate with systems engineers, embedded software developers, integration labs, and operations teams to ensure our HIL platforms remain at the forefront of validation capability-powering the test flywheel that drives GM's future of safe, autonomous mobility.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and sustain modular HIL systems for ECU and subsystem validation across multiple vehicle platforms.

  • Develop scalable rack-based test solutions integrating power distribution, network infrastructure, and environmental management for high-availability operations.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Systems, Firmware, and Validation Engineering to define I/O mappings, harnessing, and test configurations.

  • Deploy automation and monitoring systems for bench health, including power cycling, network diagnostics, and logging infrastructure.

  • Drive lab capacity expansion projects, including facility layout, power/network planning, and thermal management.

  • Continuously innovate to improve efficiency, reusability, and modularity across the HIL fleet; contribute to design libraries and shared tools.

  • Complete bench bring up, parts ordering, and integration of components ranging from boards to sensors.

  • Support flashing and configuration changes and develop preventative maintenance processes to ensure bench fleet health.

  • Be hands on the ground for rapid responses to bench related issues.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering-or equivalent hands-on experience in HIL, lab automation, or robotics integration.

  • 4+ years of experience in design, integration, and maintenance of hardware validation systems or HIL infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with ECU harnessing, power systems, and signal integrity best practices.

  • Competence with Linux CLI, networking (Ethernet, switches, VLANs), and power distribution.

  • Proven record of cross-functional collaboration, vendor management, and hands-on debugging of complex electromechanical systems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building or maintaining large-scale HIL or test automation systems supporting multiple ECUs or vehicle domains.

  • Familiarity with Python, CAN/LIN tools (Vector, Kvaser, etc.), and test automation frameworks.

  • Experience with thermal and EMI management, system grounding, and rack-level cable routing.

  • Knowledge of lab operations, EHS compliance, and facility management.
