Common Search/ComparisonHighway Engineer vs Civil Engineer

Highway Engineers focus specifically on designing, constructing, and maintaining roads and highways, often working within transportation departments or specialized firms. Civil Engineers have a broader role, working on various infrastructure projects including buildings, bridges, and water systems. Both roles require similar credentials and often overlap in work environments, but Highway Engineers specialize in transportation infrastructure.

What does a highway engineer do?

A Highway Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the construction and maintenance of roads, highways, and related infrastructure. Their work includes ensuring that transportation routes are safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. They collaborate with other engineers, government agencies, and contractors to address traffic flow, drainage, materials, and safety standards. Highway Engineers also assess existing road conditions and recommend improvements or repairs as needed.

What are some common challenges highway engineers face when working on large infrastructure projects?

Highway Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with strict safety and environmental regulations. Working on large-scale projects also requires adapting to unexpected site conditions and balancing budget constraints with quality standards. Effective communication and collaboration with surveyors, contractors, and government agencies are essential to address these challenges and keep projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a highway engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Highway Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, road design, and construction management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Proficiency with CAD software, transportation modeling tools, and project management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective highway infrastructure development and maintenance.

What is a highway engineer?

A highway engineer specializes in designing and maintaining roads, bridges, and tunnels to ensure safe and efficient transportation in a region. As a highway engineer, you must understand how traffic moves through a location for vehicles and pedestrians to determine the best flow of traffic. You must also know what kind of road surface would work best for each project. Highway engineers may work on a project from the design phase all the way through construction, and often are called back to maintain the structures to make sure they are still fully functional.

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a qualified Highway Engineer I to join our Transportation team in one of our Florida offices located in Jacksonville, Pensacola, Tampa, or Orlando.

In this role, you will contribute to the planning, analysis, and design of roadway and transportation infrastructure projects for a variety of public-sector clients. Working alongside experienced transportation professionals, you will help develop innovative and practical solutions that improve mobility, safety, and connectivity throughout the communities we serve.

This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of transportation projects, including roadway improvements, intersection enhancements, interchange design, ADA compliance initiatives, pedestrian safety upgrades, and traffic management projects. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams while continuing to expand your technical expertise and project delivery experience.

What You'll Do:

As a Highway Engineer, you will support the design and development of transportation projects from concept through final design and construction documentation. You will work closely with Project Managers, Senior Engineers, and technical staff to prepare engineering solutions that meet client objectives, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.

This role provides opportunities to participate in all phases of project delivery while developing expertise in roadway design, transportation planning, and highway engineering best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design of roadway, highway, bridge, and transportation improvement projects for state and local agency clients.
  • Prepare geometric layouts, roadway alignments, maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans, ADA improvements, drainage considerations, and transportation safety enhancements.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting project documentation.
  • Utilize OpenRoads Designer (ORD), MicroStation, Civil 3D, and other engineering software to develop design models and construction documents.
  • Perform engineering calculations, technical analyses, and design evaluations to support project development.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, planners, and technical staff to deliver high-quality transportation solutions.
  • Participate in field investigations, site visits, and data collection activities to support project planning and design efforts.
  • Assist with agency coordination and support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local design standards.
  • Prepare technical memoranda, reports, and presentation materials as required.
  • Support project schedules, quality control efforts, and overall project delivery objectives.

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in highway, roadway, or transportation engineering.
  • Experience utilizing OpenRoads Designer (ORD), InRoads, MicroStation, Civil 3D, or similar roadway design software.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO, FDOT, MUTCD, and ADA design standards and guidelines.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze engineering alternatives and develop practical design recommendations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Self-motivated with a commitment to professional growth and continuous learning.

Why PRIME AE:

We don’t just fill positions; we invest in people.

At PRIME AE, you’ll find a supportive, flexible environment where careers are built intentionally, not accidentally. You’ll work on projects that improve everyday life, alongside colleagues who challenge and respect one another.
