Position Summary:
Under general supervision, collaborates with Tribal health partners to design research projects, and collect, analyze and disseminate health data/findings. Provides technical assistance, statistical analysis, grant writing, research and funding advocacy in one or more aligned health focus areas to improve the health of Alaska Native People.
Position Responsibilities:
Health Researcher I
Conducts research that aligns with data informed health needs to include grant writing, research design, complete Alaska Area Institutional Review (AAIRB), ANTHC Health Research Review Committee (HRRC, and Tribal review applications, recruitment, data analysis, interpretation of findings, and dissemination of results.
Responsible for project oversight to include budget management, adherence to research protocol, and engaged collaboration with Tribal partners. Ensures compliance with all grant requirements, ANTHC policies, and ensures all research activities comply with AAIRB and HRRC approvals.
Represents the Research Department to local, state and federal agencies to support mutual interests in future research directions, data collection, quality control and dissemination. Identifies sources of funding and writes grant proposals. Organizes and conducts presentations to Tribal health directors, Indian Health Service and other health care providers and related organizations. Participates in manuscript writing as necessary.
Participates in strategic planning for the Research Department. Collaborates with other Research Services staff and Tribal partners to ensure the scientific accuracy, timeliness and appropriateness of research project; supports the development of lay and scholarly dissemination materials. Maintains open and collaborative communication with persons involved with research, and groups that provide Native health information at the Tribal, state and national levels. May travel occasionally to remote locations.
Health Researcher II
Identifies and analyzes public health data relevant to Alaska Native health. Researches, interprets technical data and prepares reports. Develops information products for Tribes, Tribal health corporations, health agencies, and others, as appropriate. Leads and supports the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication on relevant topics.
Provides technical assistance, which may include, but is not limited to statistical analysis, grant writing, research and funding advocacy in one or more specialty areas to Tribes, Tribal organizations, or Tribal-serving organizations. Identifies research proposals to improve the health of Alaska Natives Peoples. Represents ANTHC and advocates for Alaska Native health through research partnerships.
Represents ANTHC to local, state and federal agencies to support interests in data collection, quality control and information dissemination. Identifies sources of funding and writes grant proposals.
Organizes and conducts presentations to Tribes, Tribal health organizations, and others, as requested. Develops and maintains collaborative and professional communication with persons involved with research and with groups that provide health information at the Tribal, state and national levels, where appropriate.
Senior Health Researcher (III)
Assists the Director of Research Services Department in developing and maintaining a tribally operated research program, including the provision of training and technical supervision to less senior researchers. Acts in the Director's absence as requested.
Identifies sources of supplemental funding for Research Services, plans and coordinates responses to competitive grant opportunities, assigns and coordinates the work of other team members in proposal development, and serves as principal writer of applications for funding.
Collaborates with RS Director to ensure scientific accuracy, timeliness and appropriateness of community/partner dissemination materials; supports the development of lay and scholarly materials. Maintains open and collaborative communication with persons involved with research and groups that provide Alaska Native health information at the Tribal, state and national levels.
Supports the preparation of peer-reviewed publications. Serves as primary and/or co-author on publications.
Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to professional and technical staff. Develops goals and priorities, and assigns tasks and projects. Develops staff skills and training plans. Counsels, trains and coaches staff. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations. Meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues. Effectively addresses personnel issues in order to promote a productive and healthy work environment.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
Health Researcher I
A Master's in biological sciences (including medical), mathematical sciences, social sciences, or related field from an accredited college program. Professional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.
Health Researcher II/Senior Health Researcher (III)
A Doctorate Degree (PhD) in biological sciences (including medical), mathematical sciences, social sciences, or related field. Professional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Health Researcher I
Non-supervisory - Four (4) years' experience in research work or health research in a health care, public health, or academic environment. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Supervisory - Two (2) years' experience involving employee supervision.
Health Researcher II
Non-Supervisory - Five (5) years' years of post-doctoral research or public health related experience or advanced independent research experience.

Senior Health Researcher (III)
Non-Supervisory- Seven (7) years of post-doctoral epidemiology or public health related experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION - All
Demonstrated competency in oral and written communication.
Health Researcher II
Primary authorship in two (2) significant reports or publications in a public health related field.

Five (5) presentations at public health related meetings or conference in the past three (3) years.
Senior Health Researcher (III)
Primary authorship in five (5) significant reports or publications in a public health related field.
AND
Five (5) presentations at public health related meetings or conference in the past three (3) years.
PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
Health Researcher II
Doctorate Degree in biological sciences (including medical), mathematical sciences, social sciences, or related field.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
All Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to possess additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule or be called out to work off-shift. This position may require travel to remote locations by the request of Program Director or projects' needs.
