What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Health Informatics Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Informatics Consultant, you need a solid background in healthcare systems, data analysis, and informatics, often supported by a degree in health informatics, information technology, or a related field. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, data analytics tools, and certifications such as CAHIMS or CPHIMS are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills make professionals stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential for effectively bridging the gap between clinical needs and technological solutions to improve healthcare outcomes.

What are some common challenges Health Informatics Consultants face when implementing new health IT systems in healthcare organizations?

Health Informatics Consultants often encounter challenges like resistance to change from clinical staff, managing data integration from multiple legacy systems, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. These professionals must balance technical requirements with the practical needs of healthcare providers, often facilitating training sessions and troubleshooting issues post-implementation. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as consultants regularly collaborate with IT teams, administrators, and clinical personnel to ensure successful system adoption.

What are Health Informatics Consultants?

Health Informatics Consultants are professionals who help healthcare organizations use information technology and data to improve patient care, streamline operations, and comply with regulations. They analyze clinical and administrative processes, recommend and implement health IT systems like electronic health records, and train staff on best practices. Their expertise bridges the gap between healthcare providers and technology, making them essential for modern, efficient healthcare delivery.

What is the difference between Health Informatics Consultant vs Health Data Analyst?

Job description

Job Family:

Technology Consulting

Travel Required:

Up to 75%+

Clearance Required:

None

Guidehouse's Health Technology Consulting (HTC) practice is looking for an Associate Director to lead revenue cycle technology engagements across our Commercial Health client portfolio. This person will serve as a senior advisor to health system executives, guiding clients through the full lifecycle of revenue cycle technology work: strategy, platform assessment, implementation oversight, and post-live optimization. The revenue cycle technology market is saturated with generalists. Our clients need someone who has been inside these platforms, who understands what the configuration decisions actually mean for billing operations, and who can speak honestly about where the technology falls short and what to do about it.

This is a client-facing leadership role. The Associate Director will own executive relationships, lead engagement teams, contribute to business development, and bring deep technical credibility to every conversation.

What You Will Do:

Lead Client Engagements

You will serve as the senior Guidehouse presence on revenue cycle technology accounts. That means owning the relationship with the CFO, VP of Revenue Cycle, and CDIO, managing workstreams across a team, and being accountable for the quality and direction of our work. Engagements vary: some involve assessing a health system's current platform configuration and identifying revenue leakage; others involve guiding a client through a post-live stabilization after a difficult Epic go-live; others are full optimization programs aimed at reducing denial rates, improving clean claim rates, or restructuring CBO operations. You will be expected to bring a point of view into every room, not just facilitate a process.

Deliver on Revenue Cycle Technology Depth

Guidehouse's value in this market depends on our consultants knowing the platforms at a level that earns client trust quickly. For this role, that means revenue cycle first: Meditech Expanse, denial workqueue design, and the operational logic that ties configuration decisions to billing outcomes. You will translate that platform knowledge into practical recommendations for clients across the revenue cycle continuum, from front-end patient access through back-end billing and collections.

Clients also bring us Epic, Oracle Health, and athenahealth environments, and this person should be able to contribute meaningfully in those contexts as well.

Grow the Practice

This role carries business development responsibility. You will identify expansion opportunities within existing accounts, support proposal development, represent Guidehouse at industry events including HFMA and ViVE, and contribute to the firm's external point of view on revenue cycle technology. The expectation is that you will build and maintain a pipeline over time, not just deliver on what is already sold.

Develop the Team

You will lead engagement teams from Analyst through Senior Consultant, providing active coaching and substantive feedback. Developing the revenue cycle technology expertise of the people around you is part of the job, not a side responsibility.

What We Are Looking For

The right candidate has spent meaningful time inside revenue cycle technology, either as a consultant, an implementation specialist, or an operations leader, and has accumulated enough platform depth that they can identify problems that others miss. They are comfortable in front of executives and confident enough in their own expertise to push back when client assumptions are wrong.

What You Will Need:

  • Eight to twelve years of combined experience in health IT consulting, EHR implementation, or revenue cycle operations, with prior consulting firm experience strongly preferred

  • Deep Meditech revenue cycle expertise with a minimum of three years working in Epic revenue cycle environments

  • Meaningful experience with at least one of Epic, Oracle Health, or athenahealth in a revenue cycle context

  • A track record of managing complex engagements with C-suite client exposure

  • Experience leading and developing consulting staff across multi-workstream engagements

  • Fluency in revenue cycle performance metrics including DNFB, DCFB, A/R days, first-pass rate, denial rate, clean claim rate, and net collection rate

  • Understanding of how payer and regulatory requirements intersect with EHR configuration, including CMS billing rules, prior authorization workflows, and value-based contracting structures

  • A bachelor's degree. A High School Diploma and 10+ years of relevant professional experience may be considered in leu of a bachelor's degree

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Graduate degree in health informatics, business administration, public health, or a related field

  • Experience working across payer and provider client environments

  • Familiarity with healthcare IT standards, regulatory requirements, and compliance considerations relevant to EHR implementation and optimization

  • Experience supporting or contributing to digital transformation, AI integration, or analytics strategy within health system engagements

The annual salary range for this position is $135,000.00-$225,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
