What is health and safety management?

Health and safety management refers to the processes, policies, and practices organizations use to protect the well-being of their employees, visitors, and the public. It involves identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing measures to prevent accidents and illnesses in the workplace. Effective health and safety management ensures legal compliance, reduces workplace injuries, and promotes a culture of safety. This field often includes developing safety protocols, conducting training, and monitoring workplace conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a health and safety manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health and Safety Manager, you need a solid understanding of occupational health regulations, risk assessment, and compliance, usually supported by a degree in occupational health, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with safety management systems (such as ISO 45001), incident reporting software, and certifications like NEBOSH or OSHA are commonly required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive a strong safety culture and effective training. These competencies ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and the prevention of accidents and injuries.

You'll work with teams of passionate colleagues, driven by a commitment to technical excellence and continuous learning.

As a company, we aim to build a world where communities go beyond resilience, embracing change as an opportunity to enhance safety, well-being, and quality of life. Join us to accelerate this vision and your professional development.

We are looking to add new talent to our growing team! We are currently seeking a Health & Safety Manager to work in a technical support role with highly skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment. This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a variety of projects for a diverse range of clients. This is a full-time position located preferably in our Phoenix, AZ; Boise, ID; Butte, MT; Helena, MT; Missoula, MT; or Spokane, WA offices.

As our Health & Safety Manager, you will play a critical role in collaborating with technical staff to manage and continually improve site health and safety programs for environmental remediation, site characterization, and remedial construction projects, including active and legacy mine sites. Serving clients in the energy, government, industrial and manufacturing sectors, you will help our teams and subcontractors maintain safety compliance and enhance our culture. You'll travel as needed up to 50% throughout the Mountain West region to provide expertise, training, and leadership, while reporting to the Corporate Health & Safety Director and collaborating with project and regional teams.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
In this position, you will:

  • Through delivery of these services, act as a key influencer to continuously improve H&S culture and be consistently relied upon by Project Managers, Project Principals, Staff Managers, and others as a valued partner to safely deliver client services.
  • Serve as a technical expert, reviewer, and advisor on projects related to H&S.
  • Apply H&S theory, procedures, and approaches during planning and implementation of projects. Work with project teams to integrate safety into planning and execution of work. Serve as the technical reviewer of instruments of service such as Health and Safety Plans (HASPs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and audits.
  • Manage and oversee conformance with client-specific H&S programs. Partner with client teams to engage with clients as part of project planning and delivery.
  • Develop, facilitate, and deliver H&S training, and mentor staff to ensure they have the tools, training, and knowledge necessary to perform their day-to-day functions.
  • Collaborate with corporate H&S staff in continuous improvement of H&S systems and tools by identifying improvements through engaging with and obtaining feedback from project teams and local leaders. Lead the implementation of improvements.
  • Perform field visits to understand how H&S programs impact the work we do and improve our safety culture. Observe on-site project activities using planned audits and assessments to identify hazards, ensure they are understood by staff, and help staff operate safely in conformance with corporate and client expectations.
  • Work with project teams to ensure they have the health & safety tools, training, and knowledge necessary to perform their day-to-day job functions.
  • Screen and prequalify subcontractors and promote alignment with H&A and client safety culture.
  • Support initial documentation of positive safety observations, incidents, injuries, and near misses in a reporting tool. Work with project teams to resolve H&S concerns.
  • Lead and facilitate incident investigations, using empathy, humble inquiry, and applying technical H&S knowledge to identify systemic root causes and corrective actions to aid in preventing recurrence of similar incidents.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Minimum Skills and Requirements:

  • B.S. in Safety Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related discipline.
  • At least 10 years of experience with a Health & Safety background for MSHA and HAZWOPER projects.

  • Strong commitment to compliance with company and client Health & Safety protocols.
  • Completed training/certifications in HAZWOPER, DOT HAZMAT, OSHA 30-hour construction preferred, or ability to obtain within first year.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Emotional intelligence and collaborative mindset to engage with offices, project teams, and clients across our Mountain West offices, with travel up to 50%. Travel is designed to directly impact safety culture and operational excellence, support high-visibility initiatives, provide hands-on mentorship, and deliver meaningful improvements across the region. The company supports flexible scheduling and travel planning to ensure work-life balance.
  • Must be fit for duty for multiple sites and activities including, but not limited to, working outdoors in all environments, lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, kneeling, walking, for long periods of time, passing a HAZWOPER exam, and wearing a respirator.

Preferred Skills:

  • Direct experience providing H&S support for large-scale MSHA and environmental projects, including experience working on active and legacy mine sites.
  • Familiarity with contaminated site management, characterization, and remediation field activities, and willingness to occasionally support delivery of field activities.
  • Experience implementing digital H&S management or reporting systems.
  • Be self-directed and able to work productively and prioritize multiple tasks, initiatives, and projects.
  • Able to mentor local H&S coordinators, provide coaching to staff members on H&S aspects of office and project related tasks.
