Head of  Maintenance and Grounds for the Cannon Falls Area School District

Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience

Days and Hours of Service:  260 days per year.   Typical hours assigned: 7:00 - 3:30 Mon - Fri

Qualifications: Current Boiler Engineer License or ability to obtain, along with a combination of education and previous experience in facility management field or related field. 

Immediate Supervisor: Superintendent of Schools

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Schools, the Head of Maintenance and Grounds provides leadership, planning, organization, and oversight for all district maintenance, facilities, grounds, custodial services, and capital projects. This position is responsible for ensuring that school buildings, athletic facilities, grounds, and infrastructure are safe, functional, well-maintained, and conducive to student learning and staff productivity. The Head of Maintenance and Grounds oversees preventive maintenance programs, custodial and groundskeeping operations, capital improvement projects, regulatory compliance, departmental budgets, and long-range facilities planning. The position fosters a culture of safety, exceptional customer service, accountability, continuous improvement, and effective district-wide communication. Working collaboratively with school administrators, district employees, contractors, community members, and guests, the Head of Maintenance and Grounds ensures the efficient delivery of high-quality facilities services and supports the district's educational mission through responsive leadership and operational excellence. This position requires flexibility to respond to district needs outside of normal business hours, including participation in on-call and emergency response rotations. The role includes fluctuating work hours and regular fieldwork within school buildings and district facilities to oversee projects, monitor operations, support staff, and ensure timely completion of departmental initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete data collection, record-keeping and reporting for all project records as required by law, as well in other responsibility areas. Develops and administers procedures for inventory and the purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Oversees the bidding and RFP processes whenever required to ensure that comparative prices and quotations are obtained and the school district obtains value and quality for its expenditures in a cost-effective manner..
  • Establishes, monitors and manages all safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices for the purpose of ensuring a safe environment for employees and students in their use of school facilities and transportation, and to comply with legal requirements (e.g., OSHA and Workers' Compensation).
  • Work with the Superintendent to maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect school district property and potential liabilities.
  • Assists the food service department and related equipment maintenance and operations.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and facility management software.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff, administrators, students, parents, and community members
  • Attends Board and other school district meetings as requested.
  • Supervises custodial employees with cleaning and ensures that the work relating to the repair, maintenance and improvement of school facilities and grounds  is properly carried out.
  • Manages and supervises all employees in responsibility areas, including the recruitment, selection, training, professional development and evaluation of staff; makes recommendations regarding goals, provides constructive feedback and takes corrective action if necessary.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments related to the position by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research (e.g., price trends, market conditions, supply sources, trends in collective bargaining).
  • Other duties assigned:  Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards 

  • Work in standard office and school building environments.

  • Ability to supervise and motivate diverse teams. Strong project management and organizational skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and facility management software.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform complex arithmetic operations. Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications  Ability to analyze situations to define and draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding school district finance, safety and health, and other areas under responsibility.
  • Ability to develop and implement projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Specific training or job experience required before appointment):

  1. Bachelor's Degree in facility management or related field or equivalent experience
  2. 3+ years experience in a supervisory or lead role
  3. 3+ years experience in a custodial or facility maintenance position
  4. 3+ years experience in Facilities within an educational facility
  5. Must possess (or obtain within 1 year of hire), a Boiler Engineer license.
