Job description

We are seeking a Principal Engineer - Personal Protective Equipment to join our team! Our ideal candidate will have working knowledge of personal protective equipment products, test methods, conformity assessment, and requirements. Having a background within a testing environment, knowledge of standard development processes, along with ability to travel, strong communication and presentation skills, are essential for success in this role.

This position will be responsible for driving consistency, integrity and engineering quality in the establishment and application of UL product safety certification requirements that are applied by staff located at all involved UL offices and affiliates.  Performs duties as the Principal Engineer (Primary Designated Engineer) and as a Qualified Certification Reviewer for the assigned personal protective equipment standard(s) (garments, boots, helmets, gloves, fall protection, shelters, etc.)  and has working knowledge of UL safety principles and hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE).

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Textile, or Materials Engineering or applicable PPE certification.
  • 10+ years of experience in PPE manufacturing, testing, or standards/compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering concepts in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new or unusual products.
  • Demonstrated ability to present and draft technical papers on meaning of involved requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to perform as a respected technical resource for peers, management and constituency.
  • Detailed knowledge of NFPA, ASTM, and UL's operational vocabulary and technical vocabulary common to involved categories.
  • Detailed knowledge of related standards, such as NFPA 1971, NFPA 2112, NFPA 1850, ASTM F1506.
  • Working knowledge of industry issues, needs and problems.
  • Ability to establish, track, and manage multiple projects while maintaining quality.

  • Total Rewards:  We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimated salary range for this position is $142,100-170,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 20% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).

  • Based on input from Subject Matter Experts, drafts, develops to implementation and maintains consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements in NFPA, EN/ISO, and ASTM  Standards, UL Standards and Outlines of Investigations, as well as Certification Requirement Decisions (CRDs), Technical Guidance Documents TGDs), Standardized Appendix Pages (SAPs), Follow-up Inspection Instructions (FUIIs) and other standard specific ancillary documents to provide for consistent interpretation and application of requirements for UL's product certification services.
  • Lead UL's participation in applicable outside Standards development and maintenance (ASTM, NFPA, EN/ISO) to foster consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements.
  • Develops and / or reviews the development of technical content that serves as the basis of training programs for UL Solutions Operations Staff, Field Services and other UL staff to ensure appropriate and consistent application of requirements.  Schedules staff meetings and/or teleconferences with RLRs for discussions of technical requirements, procedures, form usage, etc.
  • Serves as the technical project handler of qualified New or Unusual products.  In this role, develops or identifies requirements to address new technical developments or product features.  Works in conjunction with and utilizes the resources of the PDE Director, Chief Technical Officer, Research, Legal, Operations to completely review the New or Unusual product and develop the appropriate requirements for certification. Utilizes external resources such as UL's Fire Council in determining impact on Codes and Standards. Prepares a letter report of findings for review by the PDE Manager and distribution to the customer through Commercial Operations.
  • Works with the responsible Operations staff to determine the need for and scope of an Industry File Review (IFR) as the results of pending standards.  Works with the responsible staff to determine any necessary equipment and skills needed resulting from the changes to the standard.  Also works with CAS to determine the effective date of any needed IFR.  In conjunction with Operations, initiates IFRs for UL certified products, ensuring all affected clients are advised of the new requirements.  Drafts Important Letter and other file review form correspondence.  
  • Represents UL and participates in UL/Industry Technical Meetings and UL Council Meetings in the area of expertise as agreed to by Commercial Operations.  Provides technical support and makes technical presentations. Assists Commercial Operations in the determination of new business opportunities. Advises Commercial Operations of the technical resources needed to actively participate in new businesses.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
