How much do hardware security jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for hardware security in Colorado is $25.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.46 and $29.33 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is hardware security?

Hardware security refers to the protection of physical devices and components, such as computers, servers, and embedded systems, from attacks and unauthorized access. This field involves securing hardware against threats like tampering, cloning, side-channel attacks, and hardware Trojans. Hardware security specialists use techniques such as secure hardware design, cryptographic modules, and physical security measures to ensure device integrity and data protection. It is essential for industries where sensitive information is stored or processed, including finance, healthcare, and defense.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in hardware security, and why are they important?

To thrive in Hardware Security, you need expertise in embedded systems, cryptography, and vulnerability assessment, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like FPGA development environments, hardware description languages (HDL), side-channel analysis tools, and certifications such as CISSP or CEH are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication help professionals identify risks and convey complex security concepts. These skills and qualifications are vital for effectively protecting hardware devices against evolving security threats and ensuring the integrity of critical systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in hardware security roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in hardware security often encounter challenges such as staying ahead of rapidly evolving attack techniques and ensuring the secure design of complex hardware systems. Keeping up with emerging threats requires continuous learning and close collaboration with cross-functional teams like firmware, software, and product design. Addressing these challenges involves implementing robust security protocols, conducting regular vulnerability assessments, and participating in industry forums to share best practices. Teamwork and ongoing education are essential for success in this dynamic field.

What is the difference between Hardware Security vs Network Security?

AspectHardware SecurityNetwork Security
FocusProtecting physical devices and hardware components from tampering and attacksProtecting data and systems over networks from unauthorized access and cyber threats
CredentialsSecurity certifications like CISSP, CompTIA Security+, hardware-specific knowledgeCertifications like CISSP, CEH, network security certifications
Work EnvironmentData centers, hardware manufacturing facilities, secure labsOffice networks, cloud environments, remote locations
Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, data centers, government agenciesIT companies, financial institutions, service providers

Hardware Security focuses on safeguarding physical devices and components, ensuring they are resistant to tampering and physical attacks. Network Security, on the other hand, aims to protect data and systems over communication networks from cyber threats. While both roles require security certifications and work within the broader cybersecurity industry, their primary concerns and environments differ significantly.

Job description

YOUR MISSION

True Anomaly is seeking an innovative Engineering Manager, Electrical Engineering to lead our electrical engineering design team in the internal development of spacecraft avionics computing hardware. Reporting to the VP of New Product Engineering, this role encompasses deep technical leadership alongside people management, program planning, and product delivery. You will own the full design lifecycle for a growing portfolio of custom avionics hardware spanning high-performance processing, I/O interfaces, and mixed-signal electronics. The successful candidate will bring a strong technical vision for scalable, high-reliability embedded computeย architectures, a relentless focus on drivingย down size, weight, power, and cost (SWaPC), and the proactive mindset to continuously improve design processes and toolchains as the team and product line scale.ย

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the technical direction for spacecraft digital and mixed-signal hardware, including flight computers, payloadย computeย platforms, and interface electronicsย
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of electrical engineers across the full PCB and digital systems development lifecycleย
  • Oversee end-to-end hardware development: requirements definition, schematic capture, board layout,ย componentย selection, bring-up, integration, and qualification testingย
  • Set and enforce design standards, design review processes, and configuration management practices across all digital hardware programsย
  • Lead technical trade studies to evaluateย architectures, components, and development approaches with a focus on performance,ย SWaPC, reliability, and costย
  • Drive a forward-looking product vision for scalable avionics computing solutions that can grow with True Anomaly's spacecraft programsย
  • Champion proactive process improvement across the design-to-delivery workflow,ย identifyingย andย eliminatingย inefficiencies as the team scalesย
  • Manage schedules, budgets, staffing, and technical risk across multiple concurrent hardware development programsย
  • Collaborate with embedded software, FPGA, cybersecurity, systems engineering, and test teams to ensure seamless integration of digital hardware into the spacecraft, including the implementation of a hardware root of trust across the avionics stackย
  • Drive compliance with applicable aerospace and defense standards and lead design reviews with internal stakeholders and customersย
  • Communicate product development status and issues with leadership and stakeholdersย

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineeringย or related field (Master'sย preferred)ย
  • 10+ years of professional experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting complex digital and mixed-signal PCB designs for aerospace, defense, or high-reliability applicationsย
  • Demonstrated experience leading an electrical engineering team focused on digital systems designย
  • Deepย proficiencyย in schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium Designer or equivalent)ย
  • Strong familiarity with commonย processor, FPGA, SoC, andย SoMย architectures and their application in embeddedย computeย platformsย
  • Experience with high-speed digital interfaces including PCIe, Ethernet,ย SpaceWire, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, and USBย
  • Expertiseย in signal integrity, power integrity, and design for EMI/EMCย
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex hardware on schedule in a resource-constrained environmentย

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with radiation effects on digital electronics and mitigation strategies for space applicationsย
  • Understanding and familiarity with applicable aerospace standards (EEE-INST-002, SMC-S-016, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-461)ย
  • Experience with design qualification testing, including thermal, vibration, and EMI/EMC test campaignsย
  • Experience designing and implementing hardware security architectures, including hardware root of trust (HRoT), secure boot, and cryptographic key managementย
  • Hands-on experience with hardware security modules (HSMs), trusted platform modules (TPMs), or equivalent cryptographic security implementations in embedded systemsย
  • Experience with hardware bring-up and debug using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, current probes, and automated test equipmentย
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, startup environment or a similarly dynamic settingย

COMPENSATION

  • Base Salary: $190,000-$295,000
