Hardware Program Manager information

What is a hardware program manager?

Hardware Program Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and execution of hardware projects within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage schedules, budgets, and resources, and ensure that hardware products are delivered on time and meet quality standards. Their role often involves risk management, stakeholder communication, and problem-solving throughout the product lifecycle. Hardware Program Managers act as the primary point of contact between engineering, manufacturing, and other departments to ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware program manager?

To thrive as a Hardware Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, a solid understanding of hardware development processes, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, and CAD software, as well as certifications such as PMP, are often expected. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help you coordinate cross-functional teams and resolve issues effectively. These skills are crucial for delivering complex hardware products on time, within budget, and to quality standards.

What are some common challenges faced by hardware program managers during product development cycles?

Hardware Program Managers often navigate challenges such as coordinating cross-functional teams, managing tight schedules, and handling unexpected supply chain disruptions. They must balance technical requirements with budget and timeline constraints, ensuring all stakeholders stay aligned throughout the project. Proactive risk management and strong communication skills are essential for successfully guiding products from design through manufacturing and launch.

What is the difference between Hardware Program Manager vs Hardware Engineer?

Job description

Job Description Summary
The Lead Program Integrator (LPI) is a highly visible, mission-critical leadership role within the Magnetic Resonance (MR)'s Program Management and Integration Office (PMO).
The LPI owns end-to-end leadership of the New Product Introduction (NPI) development process, driving day-to-day execution while establishing the planning rigor, governance, and controls required to successfully deliver complex programs. This role is accountable for defining and executing product cost and quality targets that ensure delivery of the full business case. Leading a highly cross-functional team, the LPI integrates engineering, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, supply chain, and service to deliver products that meet performance, safety, reliability, and compliance requirements-while ensuring manufacturability and serviceability at launch. The LPI is the integrator, decision-maker, and execution leader who turns strategy into results.
The LPI will also lead strategic work not directly tied to traditional NPI, including M&A integration activities. This includes planning and coordinating software integration efforts, supporting delivery across the software lifecycle, and partnering with software subject matter experts to assess solution quality, maturity, and readiness.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Lead resource, material, and integrated program planning to ensure disciplined, on-time execution of program commitments.
  • Own delivery of program milestones, budgets, metrics, deliverables, and associated action items using effective project management tools and governance routines.
  • Lead design transfer activities to ensure a seamless transition from development into manufacturing and downstream functions.
  • Drive program reliability outcomes in close partnership with Systems and Reliability Engineering teams.
  • Execute day-to-day program activities within the overall program plan, using SAFe planning practices to support prioritization, dependency management, and cross-functional alignment in coordination with the Program Manager.
  • Partner with system, subsystem/platform, and service leadership teams to deliver high-quality products on schedule, within cost targets, and with the features required to delight both internal and external customers.
  • Identify, plan, and track program integration steps, clearly defining ownership, scope, timing, dependencies, and escalation paths.
  • Proactively identify, assess, and manage program risks and issues, developing contingency plans and tracking mitigation actions to closure.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication mechanisms to enable alignment, transparency, and execution rigor across global business units, functions, program teams, third-party partners, and business leadership.
  • Establish cost target baselines, track progress across product and service-related cost elements, and communicate NPI product cost status to the program core team and business leadership.
  • Ensure program cost management activities are aligned with broader MR product and service productivity initiatives, leveraging common tools and synchronized efforts to maximize business impact.
  • Ensure all regulatory deliverables are met by working closely with Regulatory Affairs and cross-functional stakeholders throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Lead planning, scheduling, and execution of global cross-functional teams, including UX Design, Usability, Software Engineering, firmware, and hardware teams, while operating within the SAFe framework.
  • Leads change through creative solutions to product, process and system design issues
  • Support M&A integration activities by coordinating third-party software integration, aligning acquired capabilities with MR product workflows, and partnering with software SMEs to assess software quality, maturity, readiness, and integration risk.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience (defined as a High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 4 additional years of progressive experience as an engineer or scientist within the relevant field).
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in engineering, program, or project leadership roles within a manufacturing, development, or research environment, including demonstrated leadership of global and/or virtual teams and delivery against quality, performance, schedule, and budget expectations.
  • Proven ability to build strong, sustained cross-functional relationships, supported by excellent communication, influence, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience leading software-related projects or partnering closely with software teams, with the ability to understand software development activities, risks, dependencies, and delivery expectations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and hands-on experience with the New Product Introduction (NPI/PRDx) lifecycle, including management of complex cross-functional dependencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality and compliance, including awareness of and adherence to the GE HealthCare Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations relevant to the role.
  • Completion of all required Quality and Compliance training within established timelines.
  • Ability to proactively identify, communicate, and escalate quality or compliance concerns, and to take timely corrective action as required.

Desired Characteristics
  • Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related discipline).
  • Working knowledge of Agile development frameworks and their application in complex product development environments.
  • Prior experience with assessing and integrating M&A products and capabilities
  • Experience doing full SDLC development of complex software applications
  • Demonstrated experience with NPI-related ISO and regulatory compliance processes, including development and maintenance of Design History Files (DHF).
  • Proven ability to think creatively and develop effective solutions when navigating competing technical requirements, business priorities, and program risks.
  • Strong track record of proactively identifying product and program risks, driving cross-functional alignment, and leading risk mitigation actions to closure.
  • Familiarity with GE HealthCare engineering tools and processes, such as MyWorkshop and PPM.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities to achieve timely, high-quality outcomes.
  • Ability to develop innovative concepts and solutions for complex, integrated products and systems.
  • Project or program leadership experience within manufacturing, development, or research environments in the healthcare industry.

  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, and energetic, with the ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent teamwork, coordination, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and organizational boundaries.
  • Experience leading or contributing to global, multi-site development programs.
  • Graduate of GE HealthCare's Edison Engineering Development Program (EEDP).
