Job description

Counseling Intern Position

Counseling interns complete their university learning contract and required on-site hours while at Texans Can Academies and will work closely with their assigned field placement supervisor. Interns will learn the role and function of Student Advocates and provide counseling supports for a mini-caseload. Weekly supervision will be provided by your assigned field placement supervisor. Activities include intake, social services assessment, supportive guidance, student and family outreach, field trips, home visits, and psycho-social referrals.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in bachelors or masters program in counseling from a Texans Can Academies affiliated counseling program
  • Referral by an affiliated counseling program for placement at Texans Can Academies
  • Working to complete a foundations field placement

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Basic coursework in counseling practices
  • The professional application of counseling values, principles, and techniques
  • Helping students and families obtain tangible services
  • Basic knowledge of supportive guidance
  • Basic knowledge of human development and behavior
  • Ability to display empathy and concern for others
  • Possess a sense of urgency and apply to all assignments, tasks, and projects
  • Have a willingness to learn and be coachable
  • Basic skills with verbal and written expression
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience with high school age students
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Gmail, phone etiquette, basic customer service, work well in teams or independently

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to punctual attendance according to assigned schedule
  • Scheduling and attending weekly face to face supervision
  • Completion of assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Engage assigned students and especially follow up on cases involving non-attendance
  • Provide supportive guidance for students exhibiting academic or behavioral issues
  • Seek consultation and assistance from assigned field supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Personal computer, typewriter, printer, copier, fax machine, and calculator

Working Conditions:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions
  • Repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer
