Gs1 information

How does a role at GS1 typically involve collaboration with other departments or organizations?

In a GS1 role, collaboration is key, as you’ll often work closely with external partners, member companies, and internal teams such as IT, standards development, and marketing. You may participate in cross-functional projects to implement or update GS1 standards, support member onboarding, and address industry-specific challenges. This environment offers opportunities to build strong professional networks and to gain a broad understanding of supply chain processes across different sectors.

What is the difference between Gs1 vs Warehouse Associate?

Gs1Warehouse Associate
Focuses on supply chain standards, barcode management, and product identificationHandles inventory, packing, shipping, and receiving in warehouses
Requires knowledge of GS1 standards and possibly certification in supply chain managementRequires physical stamina, inventory management skills, and possibly forklift certification
Works primarily in logistics, supply chain, and retail industriesWorks mainly in warehousing, distribution centers, and logistics environments

While Gs1 professionals focus on implementing and managing supply chain standards, Warehouse Associates handle day-to-day warehouse operations. Both roles are essential in logistics, but Gs1 roles are more specialized in standards and data management, whereas Warehouse Associates focus on physical inventory handling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GS1 standards specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GS1 standards specialist, you need a solid understanding of supply chain processes, barcode symbology, and data management, usually supported by a background in logistics, information systems, or business. Familiarity with GS1 standards, barcode generation software, and data synchronization tools is often required, and GS1 certification is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure accurate implementation and stakeholder collaboration. These competencies are vital for maintaining data integrity, supporting global trade, and maximizing operational efficiency.

What are GS1 standards and what do they do?

GS1 standards are globally recognized guidelines that enable businesses to identify, capture, and share information about products, locations, and assets. They are best known for the barcode system used in retail and supply chains. GS1 standards help improve efficiency, traceability, and interoperability across industries by ensuring that all parties use a common language for data. This makes it easier to track products, manage inventory, and enhance consumer safety.

Job description

Packaging Lead Engineer

In this role you will be responsible for setting up the enterprise packaging strategy and technology roadmap while leading a group of engineers.

Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive process standards and documentation to support all end-to-end packaging business and engineering workflows.

Establish packaging standards and lead execution of automation, returnable, and expendable plans while setting the standard on how Autoliv will achieve cost, quality, and sustainability goals. Assign workload to a team of engineers for new launch.

Should you be interested in overseeing these tasks and aiming for enhanced performance standards, your role will involve:

What you'll do:
  • Establish and maintain packaging standards for automation, returnable, and expendable execution; publish controlled specifications and playbooks

  • Lead governance for exceptions/waivers; chair the standards review board and manage change control (ECO/ECN)

  • Define common footprints and automation execution standards; align with safety/quality and sustainability requirements.

  • Own enterprise packaging data architecture and tools (spec/PFEP, cartonization, labeling, image vaults): governance, permissions, and data-quality SLAs.

  • Standardize master data (part-to-pack links, dunnage IDs, test results, sustainability attributes) and audit routines; lead training and adoption.

  • Select/administer cartonization and labeling systems (GS1/AIAG compliant), including template libraries and formal change control.

  • Set/enforce ID standards (serialization, barcode/QR/RFID), labeling, and traceability checkpoints (ship/receive scans, gate checks).

  • Own the portfolio/roadmap for packaging materials, formats, and automation; prioritize pilots with success criteria and scale proven solutions.

  • Conduct market/technology scouting; partner with suppliers/startups to mature innovations into standards.

  • Develop KPIs/dashboards; monitor compliance and drive corrective actions with site leaders.

  • Mentor regional teams; build capability via training, playbooks, and office hours

  • Lead and set workload for a team of packaging engineers for new model launch and serialization projects

What is required:
  • BS in Packaging Engineering (preferred) or ME/IE

  • 7–10+ years in packaging or logistics engineering, including multi-site standards/systems ownership in automotive/Tier-1 or similar high-volume manufacturing.

  • Hands-on with PFEP/spec databases, cartonization (TOPS/Cape or WMS-native), labeling, and GS1/AIAG compliance.

  • Experience integrating packaging data with ERP/PLM/WMS (e.g., SAP/Oracle; Teamcenter/Windchill); strong Excel/BI; familiarity with APIs/MDM concepts.

  • Working knowledge of ISTA/ASTM transit testing, load-securement, and sustainability/EPR considerations.

  • CAD & Packaging: SolidWorks/NX/CATIA; ArtiosCAD for corrugated/dunnage; read drawings, GD&T, basic tolerance stacks.

What’s in it for you:
  • Attractive compensation package

  • Recognition awards, company events, family events, university discount options and many more perks.

  • Gender Pay Equality
