What is a group product manager?

A group product manager is responsible for product strategy, and you usually work for a software company and report to company executives. In this career, you oversee teams from development to launch and stay up-to-date with competitors’ products. Duties may include conducting customer surveys, inspecting budgets, and developing business models. You start with a job as a product manager (PM) to gain experience in the field. Other qualifications include strong leadership skills, and a bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, or a related field. Certifications may be required based on industry.

How does a group product manager balance strategic leadership with hands-on involvement in product development?

A Group Product Manager (GPM) is responsible for setting the overall product vision and strategy for a portfolio of products, while also mentoring and guiding individual product managers on their teams. While much of their time is spent on high-level planning, cross-functional alignment, and stakeholder management, GPMs are also expected to dive into the details when necessary—such as refining roadmaps, prioritizing features, or resolving critical issues. Successful GPMs find a balance by establishing clear processes, delegating appropriately, and fostering open communication, ensuring both strategic goals and day-to-day execution are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a group product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Group Product Manager, you need deep expertise in product strategy, market analysis, and team leadership, often supported by a degree in business or technology and several years of product management experience. Familiarity with product management tools like Jira, Aha!, and analytics platforms, as well as Agile or Scrum certifications, is typically expected. Exceptional communication, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to mentor and inspire teams are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure effective product vision execution, drive team alignment, and deliver products that meet both business goals and customer needs.

We are seeking a Senior Product Manager to join Cvent's Content Management team, reporting to the Senior Group Product Manager. In this role, you'll own execution across development teams while playing a key role in shaping product direction through customer insight and data-driven decision making. You'll partner with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure what we build solves real customer problems and delivers measurable business value.
In This Role, You Will:
  • Own and drive end-to-end execution across development teams, managing backlog prioritization, sprint planning, and delivery cadence.
  • Champion the voice of the customer by gathering insights through interviews, support data, and usage analytics-translating findings into clear, actionable product decisions that balance short-term delivery with long-term product health.
  • Deeply interrogate customer pain points through discovery and research-validating potential solutions with customers and stakeholders before committing to build.
  • Define and communicate clear problem statements, success metrics, and acceptance criteria for your teams.
  • Partner with Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success to drive successful go-to-market launches, ensuring teams are enabled and customer-facing messaging reflects product reality.
  • Identify, track, and manage cross-team dependencies, proactively flagging risks and aligning with partner teams to keep delivery on track.
  • Own product-level performance reporting-tracking key metrics, feature adoption, and outcomes-using data to inform iteration, prioritization, and stakeholder communication.
  • Contribute to the broader content management portfolio strategy in collaboration with the Senior Group Product Manager.
  • Build strong working relationships with Engineering, Design, and QA to drive high-quality, on-time releases.

Here's What You Need:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 7+ years of product management experience, ideally in B2B SaaS.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with engineering teams in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Strong analytical skills-comfortable working with usage data, defining KPIs, and making evidence-based decisions.
  • Proven ability to gather and synthesize customer feedback into product requirements.
  • Experience designing and shipping AI-powered features or functionality within a product.
  • Experience working with Marketing, Sales, or Customer Success on product launches.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to align stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Self-starter who can manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

This role is ideal for a product leader who thrives on execution, is energized by customer problems, and wants to grow their strategic influence in a team that's building the future of event technology.
