What Is a Greeting Card Writing Job?

A greeting card writing job is one where you come up with and write the notes contained within different types of greeting cards. Your responsibilities may include dealing with specific types of cards, such as those to express sympathy after a tragedy, those that celebrate a milestone or achievement, or thank you cards for different occasions. In addition to writing the cards, your duties include editing your writing, attending meetings with other members of the department to review or set new goals for new types of message, and preparing for busy times of the year, such as Valentine’s Day.

What are some common challenges greeting card writers face when trying to create original and impactful messages?

Greeting card writers often face the challenge of expressing universal emotions in a fresh and authentic way while adhering to word limits and brand voice. Striking a balance between creativity and commercial appeal can be difficult, especially when writing for diverse occasions and audiences. Additionally, writers must continuously generate new ideas and avoid clichés, which requires strong creative stamina and attention to emerging trends in language and sentiment.

What is greeting card writing?

Greeting card writing involves creating short, expressive messages or verses for various occasions such as birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and other celebrations. Writers craft language that resonates emotionally, often balancing wit, warmth, or sentiment depending on the card's purpose. Successful greeting card writers are creative, concise, and understand how to convey feelings in just a few lines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Greeting Card Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Greeting Card Writer, you need strong creative writing abilities, a keen sense of language, and an understanding of emotional expression, often supported by experience in copywriting or literature. These skills ensure the creation of impactful, relatable cards that resonate with diverse audiences and meet market demands.

About Designer Greetings

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Our story began in Staten Island, NY in the summer of 1982. After many years in the greeting card business, Jack Gimbelman seized the opportunity to open his own business with his wife, Vickie. Jack ran the sales and purchasing functions, and Vickie managed the office. The company was small - only 5,000 sq. ft. and five employees, but Designer Greetings was passionate about its product, its customers and its employees. The year 2009 was remarkable and unprecedented. In the beginning of January, the company opened a permanent showroom at AmericasMart in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, to complement its headquarters' showroom in New Jersey; by month’s end, Designer Greetings had acquired two additional companies: Glitterwrap™, a manufacturer of high design gift bags and wrap, and Red Farm Studio©, long-recognized for its niche in the gift and stationery industry in nautical/coastal and paper products. Today, Designer Greetings remains a family-owned and operated company with Steven and Fern Gimbelman heading the operation as President and Co-President/Art Director, respectively, and Vickie Gimbelman as Co-Founder/Executive Director.
