What is a green coffee?

A Green Coffee job typically involves sourcing, buying, quality control, and logistics of unroasted coffee beans. Professionals in this field work with coffee producers, traders, and roasters to ensure high-quality beans are selected and delivered. Responsibilities may include evaluating bean quality, managing supply chain operations, and negotiating contracts. This role requires knowledge of coffee cultivation, market trends, and sustainability practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the green coffee position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Green Coffee Buyer or Specialist, you need deep knowledge of coffee origins, grading, and quality assessment, often supported by Q Grader certification or similar credentials. Experience with cupping protocols, lab equipment for moisture and density analysis, and supply chain management systems is highly valued. Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills are essential for working with producers and partners globally. These abilities ensure you can source high-quality beans efficiently, maintain supplier trust, and support consistent product standards for your organization.

What are the main challenges faced by green coffee buyers, and how can candidates prepare for them?

Green Coffee Buyers frequently face challenges such as fluctuations in market prices, variable harvest quality due to weather, and the logistics of sourcing beans globally. To prepare, candidates should develop strong analytical skills, stay updated on market trends, and build relationships with producers to manage supply risks. Adaptability is crucial, as changes in shipping, customs, or harvest timing can affect purchasing plans. Typically, successful buyers work closely with quality control teams and roasters to ensure beans meet company standards before entering the production process. Building effective partnerships and maintaining clear communication both internally and with suppliers can help overcome these challenges and ensure a steady supply of quality green coffee.
