What is a Green Coffee job?

A Green Coffee job typically involves sourcing, buying, quality control, and logistics of unroasted coffee beans. Professionals in this field work with coffee producers, traders, and roasters to ensure high-quality beans are selected and delivered. Responsibilities may include evaluating bean quality, managing supply chain operations, and negotiating contracts. This role requires knowledge of coffee cultivation, market trends, and sustainability practices.

What are the main challenges faced by Green Coffee Buyers, and how can candidates prepare for them?

Green Coffee Buyers frequently face challenges such as fluctuations in market prices, variable harvest quality due to weather, and the logistics of sourcing beans globally. To prepare, candidates should develop strong analytical skills, stay updated on market trends, and build relationships with producers to manage supply risks. Adaptability is crucial, as changes in shipping, customs, or harvest timing can affect purchasing plans. Typically, successful buyers work closely with quality control teams and roasters to ensure beans meet company standards before entering the production process. Building effective partnerships and maintaining clear communication both internally and with suppliers can help overcome these challenges and ensure a steady supply of quality green coffee.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Green Coffee position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Green Coffee Buyer or Specialist, you need deep knowledge of coffee origins, grading, and quality assessment, often supported by Q Grader certification or similar credentials. Experience with cupping protocols, lab equipment for moisture and density analysis, and supply chain management systems is highly valued. Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills are essential for working with producers and partners globally. These abilities ensure you can source high-quality beans efficiently, maintain supplier trust, and support consistent product standards for your organization.

  • Conduct audits with plant leadership to ensure compliance and advance continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strengthen operational capabilities through targeted training, development, and process standardization.
  • Maintain and enhance service levels across all client groups.
  • Oversee drayage and warehousing contracts, supporting strategy and negotiations to ensure performance, compliance, and alignment across cost, service, and capacity.
  • Drive network-wide operational strategy aligned to long-term supply chain and business objectives.
  • Lead vendor performance management through business reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and mitigate risks to ensure continuity of supply.
  • Serve as escalation lead for complex cross-functional operational challenges.

Supply Chain Partnering
  • Partner across the supply chain to drive process, system, and tool improvements that enhance scalability and performance.
  • Engage internal customers and cross-functional stakeholders to align on evolving business needs, priorities, and solutions.
  • Influence and advise stakeholders by translating insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Lead initiatives that optimize end-to-end supply chain performance.
  • Monitor industry trends to identify innovation opportunities and emerging best practices.

Systems
  • Provide Oracle system support and troubleshooting for green coffee warehousing.
  • Lead system and process transformation efforts, including automation and digital innovation.
  • Partner with IT to deliver scalable system enhancements and integrated solutions.
  • Leverage analytics and reporting to generate insights and support strategic decision-making.

Planning
  • Support annual operating plan, budgeting, and forecast development.
  • Contribute to long-term planning, prioritization, and network optimization strategies.
  • Evaluate financial and operational impacts to inform decision-making and drive value creation.
  • Lead project execution, including performance tracking, reporting, and delivery.
  • Manage resources and expenses to meet departmental and organizational goals.
  • Oversee warehousing and drayage spend, driving cost optimization.
  • Lead scenario planning to support future growth and operational resilience.
  • Present insights and recommendations to leadership to guide strategic decisions.

We'd love to hear from people with:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in operations, supply chain, international business, or other applicable fields
  • 5 to 8 years of operations or supply chain management experience
  • Strong Oracle or other ERP background
  • Highly skilled and experienced in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Advanced skills in data visualization technology (Tableau and Power BI)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to build relationships
  • Ability to manage projects and the processes independently, including defining, developing, documenting, and executing multiple related tasks.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to coach and mentor others
  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards
