What Are Graphic Design Apprenticeships?

A graphic design apprenticeship involves gaining experience as a graphic designer by training alongside professional designers. Your duties as an intern can vary from program to program. Your responsibilities typically involve assisting in the creation of visual materials for marketing, education, communication, or other purposes. In an agency setting, you work under the supervision of a senior designer, an art director, or a creative director. During your apprenticeship, you may create images manually, but most internships also involve using programs like CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator. This may be a required part of your degree program, but internship programs also exist for recent graduates.

What is a Graphic Design Apprenticeship?

A Graphic Design Apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines practical work experience with classroom learning in the field of graphic design. Apprentices work alongside experienced designers to develop their skills in areas such as branding, digital illustration, typography, and layout design. This pathway allows individuals to gain hands-on experience, earn a wage, and often achieve recognized qualifications while learning on the job. It is ideal for those seeking to start a career in graphic design without following a traditional university route.

What kinds of projects can I expect to work on during a Graphic Design Apprenticeship?

During a Graphic Design Apprenticeship, you will typically assist with a variety of real-world projects such as creating marketing materials, designing social media graphics, assisting with branding assets, and supporting website or app design. Apprentices often work closely with senior designers, marketers, and other team members, gaining hands-on experience while receiving feedback and mentorship. This exposure helps you build a diverse portfolio and develop practical skills that are highly valued in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graphic Design Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graphic Design Apprentice, you need a solid understanding of design principles, a portfolio showcasing creative work, and often a relevant academic background or coursework. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is typically required. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn help apprentices excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills are essential for producing high-quality designs, meeting client expectations, and growing professionally in the field.
