Home Office:Seattle/Hybrid: Required in the office 3 days a week & 2 days remote. Office hours: 8:30-4:30

The Mockingbird Society (TMS) is a non-partisan advocacy organization focused on transforming foster care and ending youth homelessness. We do this by creating, supporting, and advocating for racially equitable, healthy environments that develop youth and young adults at risk of or experiencing foster care or homelessness.

POSITION SUMMARY


The Grants Manager leads and manages The Mockingbird Society's institutional funding efforts, ensuring the thoughtful and effective execution of all grant proposals, reports, and related processes. This role is responsible for owning the full lifecycle of institutional funding (from prospect research and proposal development to reporting and tracking) while maintaining strong internal coordination across teams.

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Grants Manager works closely with program, communications, and finance staff to co-create compelling, accurate, and timely grant materials. This role ensures that all submissions reflect Mockingbird's mission, values, and impact, while maintaining strong systems for tracking deadlines, deliverables, and revenue.

This position is highly execution-focused and detail-oriented, with significant responsibility for writing, project management, and systems tracking. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of quality and accuracy.

This is a hybrid position; the Grants Manager is expected to be available occasional nights and weekends for fundraising and programmatic events and/or meetings.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Writing & Management (Core Ownership)

  • Lead the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals, reports, and letters of inquiry
  • Manage the full grants lifecycle, ensuring all deadlines and requirements are met with care and integrity
  • Maintain a comprehensive grants calendar and pipeline, tracking submissions, awards, and reporting timelines
  • Tailor proposals to align with funder priorities while maintaining consistency in messaging and voice
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all submissions, including budgets, attachments, and supporting documents


Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Collaborate with program staff to gather data, outcomes, and stories that reflect community impact and lived experience
  • Partner with Finance to develop grant budgets that responsibly support program sustainability and equity
  • Coordinate with Communications to ensure alignment in messaging, voice, and values
  • Translate programmatic work into clear, compelling written narratives that honor the experiences of young people and caregivers

Grants Tracking & Systems

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date grant records in Salesforce and internal systems
  • Track proposal status, revenue projections, and reporting requirements
  • Generate reports and summaries to support development planning and forecasting
  • Maintain organized grant files, templates, and boilerplate materials
  • Identify and implement improvements to grants tracking systems and workflows to increase accessibility and clarity
  • Bring curiosity and comfort with technology, including Salesforce, Power BI dashboards, and the responsible use of AI tools to enhance data-driven storytelling, efficiency, and grant management

Funder Stewardship Support

  • Draft and coordinate funder reports, updates, and acknowledgment materials grounded in transparency and shared learning
  • Support preparation for funder meetings, site visits, and check-ins
  • Ensure timely and thoughtful stewardship of institutional funders in partnership with the Director of Development

Department Operations & Support

  • Contribute to development team planning, campaigns, and broader fundraising efforts
  • Support events and other development initiatives that build community connection and engagement
  • Maintain internal resources, templates, and documentation for grant processes
  • Other duties as assigned based on organizational needs


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, English/journalism, nonprofit management, business, or a related field or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity & social justice
  • 3-5 years of experience in grant writing, nonprofit fundraising, or related work
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with strong attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Salesforce (or other donor management software) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency with technology platforms including Salesforce (or similar CRM), Power BI dashboards, and the responsible use of AI tools to support grant writing, tracking, and data analysis
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to engage diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, compelling narratives
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across teams
  • A passion for the organization's mission and commitment to advancing its goals


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in nonprofit, advocacy, or youth-serving organizations
  • Experience or familiarity with Community-Centric Fundraising (CCF) and a commitment to equity-centered, community-driven practices


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Upon date of hire, must be able to pass a Washington State and national criminal history check
  • Access to reliable transportation, a valid WA state driver's license, and adequate insurance
  • Frequent travel to Olympia, WA required during the legislative session
  • Occasional travel to partner locations and conferences
  • Compliance with all agency policies regarding COVID-19 as well as state-mandated vaccination policy

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The starting hourly rate range for this position is $26 - $36 per hour ($55,000-$75,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, The Mockingbird Society offers:
