What does a Graduate Sustainability Engineer do?

A Graduate Sustainability Engineer assists in designing and implementing sustainable solutions within engineering projects. They typically work with senior engineers to evaluate the environmental impact of projects, help develop energy-efficient systems, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Their role often includes conducting research, analyzing data, and contributing to sustainability reports or initiatives. This entry-level position provides practical experience in sustainability practices while supporting the transition to a more sustainable built environment.

What can I do with a master's in sustainable development?

A master's in sustainable development prepares graduates for roles such as sustainability analyst, environmental consultant, or renewable energy project manager. These positions often require skills in data analysis, environmental policy, and project management, and may involve working with tools like GIS software or sustainability reporting frameworks.

What types of projects do Graduate Sustainability Engineers typically work on during their first year?

Graduate Sustainability Engineers often start by supporting senior engineers on a variety of projects, such as energy audits, green building certifications, and lifecycle assessments. They may be involved in data collection, analysis, and the preparation of sustainability reports. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including architects, mechanical engineers, and project managers—is common, which helps develop both technical and communication skills. These early projects provide valuable hands-on experience and exposure to sustainability best practices across different sectors.

What is the difference between Graduate Sustainability Engineer vs Sustainability Analyst?

AspectGraduate Sustainability EngineerSustainability Analyst

The Graduate Sustainability Engineer typically focuses on supporting engineering projects with sustainability components, often working on design and implementation. In contrast, a Sustainability Analyst primarily analyzes data, prepares reports, and assesses sustainability performance. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are used across industries aiming to improve environmental impact, but they differ in daily tasks and work settings.

What can you do with a degree in sustainability?

A graduate sustainability engineer can work in roles focused on developing environmentally friendly solutions, assessing the impact of projects, and implementing sustainable practices across industries. They often use skills in data analysis, environmental regulations, and sustainability reporting, and may pursue certifications like LEED or ISO 14001 to enhance their qualifications.

What kind of job can I get with a sustainability degree?

A graduate sustainability engineer can work in roles such as environmental consultant, sustainability analyst, renewable energy project engineer, or corporate sustainability manager. These positions often require knowledge of environmental regulations, data analysis, and sustainability reporting tools, and may involve working in industries like energy, manufacturing, or consulting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graduate Sustainability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Sustainability Engineer, you need a relevant engineering degree (such as environmental, civil, or mechanical) and a solid understanding of sustainable design principles. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, energy modeling software (e.g., IES VE), and certifications such as LEED or BREEAM is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and convey complex sustainability concepts. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering innovative, compliant, and impactful solutions to environmental challenges in the built environment.

Are sustainability engineers in demand?

Sustainability engineers are in increasing demand as organizations focus on environmental compliance, renewable energy, and sustainable development. They often require knowledge of environmental regulations, green technologies, and data analysis tools, making their skills highly sought after in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy.

The Opportunity

A leading sustainability enterprise are looking for an ambitious, analytical, and forward-thinking graduate to join their growing environmental advisory team in Los Angeles. As a Graduate Sustainability Consultant, you won’t just be filing paperwork—you will actively help corporate clients, real estate developers, and municipal agencies navigate decarbonization, resource efficiency, and local environmental compliance regulations.

This role offers a structured mentorship pipeline designed to take you from a raw graduate to a fully autonomous, specialized consultant within 18 months.

Responsibilities:

  • Carbon Accounting & Reporting: Assist in compiling and verifying Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories using enterprise sustainability software.
  • Built Environment Strategy: Coordinate with engineering and architecture teams to analyze building-scale data, helping developments hit targeted certifications (LEED, WELL, or local energy compliance codes).
  • Data Analytics & Modeling: Build and maintain data models tracking client resource usage, focusing on water stewardship, waste diversion, and energy efficiency.
  • ESG Materiality: Perform market research and peer benchmarking to help corporate clients identify and prioritize their long-term Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risks.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Education: A recently completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Infrastructure, Engineering, Economics, or a related data-driven discipline.
  • Analytical Mindset: Comfortable managing spreadsheets and large data sets. If you can spot trends in raw numbers, you will thrive here.
  • California-Conscious: A baseline interest in California climate policies (e.g., Title 24, building decarbonization mandates) is a huge plus.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to translate dense, technical scientific metrics into clear, actionable business insights for non-technical stakeholders.

Benefits:

  • Direct mentorship from senior directors managing flagship West Coast green initiatives.
  • Paid paths to professional certifications (LEED Green Associate, TRUE Waste, Greenhouse Gas Protocol).
  • 401(k) matching, comprehensive medical/dental/vision coverage, and wellness stipends.
  • A vibrant, purpose-driven office culture right in the heart of LA, complete with flexible hybrid working parameters.
