Job Description Summary & Additional Information

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Student Services Office seeks to hire a UMD Graduate Assistant to provide administrative support to the undergraduate office and general academic advising to undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students. The position would require approximately 20 hours per week during the term and full-time during summer and winter break. We anticipate offering a 12 month assistantship position which may continue for additional years. Academic advising is mandatory for students majoring in engineering. Advising undergraduate students in this department involves helping with course selection, recommending resources for students who are struggling academically, helping students make a 4 year plan, and helping students incorporate special programs into their plan. For example, study abroad, co-op, minor fields of study, double majors, and the BS/MS program are all popular opportunities open to our students. Additional tasks include working with student organizations, host prospective students, and handling administrative tasks that are the responsibility of the undergraduate office.

Required Qualifications:

  • Admission as a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland.
  • The position requires attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills, and strong writing skills.
  • An ability to work in a fast paced environment with strong customer service skills is desired. Database and word processing skills are required. Graphic arts and social media skills are a plus (experience creating attractive flyers, posters, brochures, etc.).
Preferences:
  • Applicants with previous experience in academic advising, education, or student affairs or degrees in education, counseling or a related field are preferred.
