Job description

We are looking for engineers to join our USN advanced research and development technology development team. We are in search of a computer engineering graduate, or a Computer Science graduate who has an interest in hardware and software interactions with some hands-on work. Another option would be a double major with a Math or Physics background. This role will include testing and repairing software with some hardware troubleshooting that can be learned on the job and there will be some international travel. The travel opportunities will vary but generally the travel includes annually: two 5-10 day trips to American military bases in Japan, a 1 week trip to Spain, and 4-5 local trips for 1-2 days. Overall, this is less than 15% travel. The ideal candidate needs to be self-motivated, able to self-manage and follow procedures accurately with respect to safety and security, and able to work with other software engineers to improve software user enhancements and efficiency in an R&D setting. We need you to join us on the ground floor of some of the latest programs. Primary work location will be in Fredericksburg, VA or Dahlgren, VA with occasional telecommute or travel opportunities.
Hardware Engineer Responsibilities Include:
  • Testing adjustments of software graphical user interfaces for local tools with the team of developers.
  • Supporting test hardware/software environment.
  • Troubleshooting hardware and software interactions. To document findings accurately. To communicate difficulties in testing and what step initiated which faults.
  • Ensuring the goal of the fix was successfully met.
  • Supporting test events through travel opportunities.
  • We will train you to support software development/updates. Background in using C++ and other DevOps tools highly desired.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (in one of these in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Related Field).
  • Knowledge of the big picture in software requirements, design, code, benchmark testing, debugging, software development lifecycle, architecture, and documentation.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Secret security clearance (at a minimum, must receive/be approved for an interim Secret security clearance in order to start) Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a SECRET Clearance.
  • Required background in C++ programming at University.
  • Any experience in an Agile software development environment and familiarity with Agile methodologies is helpful.
  • Ability to Commute and drive between Fredericksburg, VA and Dahlgren, VA may be necessary to meet job requirements. (1 hour south of Washington D.C.)

Preferred Qualifications :
  • Hardware setup, software installation experience.
  • VMware virtualization, or other hypervisor, including ESXi, virtual server configuration, network virtualization management.
