How much do electrical system design jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for electrical system design in the United States is $52.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $39.90 and $59.62 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical System Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical System Designer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and relevant industry standards, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or EPLAN), electrical simulation tools, and familiarity with codes like NEC or IEC is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and innovative electrical system solutions that meet client needs and regulatory requirements.

Is EEe a high paying job?

Electrical System Design is generally considered a well-paying profession, especially for those with a bachelor's degree, relevant certifications, and experience with design software like AutoCAD or ETAP. Salaries vary by industry, location, and level of expertise but tend to be above average compared to many other engineering roles.

What is an electrical system designer?

An electrical system designer is a professional who plans and develops electrical systems for buildings, infrastructure, or equipment, ensuring they meet safety standards and project requirements. They use tools like CAD software and often hold certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or Electrical Engineering licenses. Their work involves creating schematics, selecting components, and coordinating with other engineering disciplines throughout the design process.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in electrical system design, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical system designers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with legacy systems, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and managing tight project deadlines. Addressing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, staying updated with industry codes (like NEC or IEC), and effective communication with multidisciplinary teams. Collaborating closely with engineers, architects, and project managers helps ensure that designs are both functional and safe, while leveraging design software and simulation tools can improve efficiency and accuracy.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Electrical engineers can potentially earn $500,000 annually, primarily through senior roles, management positions, or consulting in specialized industries such as power systems, aerospace, or telecommunications. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, and working in high-paying regions or companies. Most electrical engineers earn less than this amount, with salaries typically ranging from $70,000 to $150,000 depending on experience and location.

Is an EE degree worth it?

An electrical system design engineer typically benefits from an EE degree, which provides foundational knowledge in circuits, power systems, and electronics. The degree can improve job prospects, earning potential, and eligibility for professional certifications, making it a valuable credential in the field.

What is the difference between Electrical System Design vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectElectrical System DesignElectrical Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related fieldRequires a bachelor's degree; often includes licensure or professional engineer (PE) certification
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, project sites, consulting firmsResearch labs, manufacturing, consulting, project sites
Industry UsageFocuses on creating electrical system layouts, schematics, and specificationsBroader scope including analysis, testing, and development of electrical systems

Electrical System Design specialists focus on creating detailed electrical layouts and specifications for projects, while Electrical Engineers have a broader role involving analysis, testing, and development of electrical systems. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds, but their daily tasks and scope differ.

What is electrical system design?

Electrical system design is the process of planning, creating, and documenting the layout and specifications for electrical systems in buildings, machinery, or infrastructure. This includes determining the placement of wiring, circuits, panels, and other electrical components to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with codes and standards. Electrical system designers work with architects, engineers, and contractors to create accurate blueprints and schematics. Their work is essential for ensuring reliable power distribution, system integration, and the protection of people and equipment.
