What is the difference between Graduate Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectGraduate EngineeringMechanical Engineering
QualificationsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldRequires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, often with licensure options
Work EnvironmentEntry-level roles in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and technologyDesign, analysis, and manufacturing in industries like automotive, aerospace, and energy
Employer UsageEmployers hire graduate engineers for training and development programsEmployers seek mechanical engineers for product design, testing, and maintenance

Graduate Engineering is an entry-level role for those with an engineering degree, often across multiple disciplines, while Mechanical Engineering is a specialized field focusing on designing and manufacturing mechanical systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in focus and career paths.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graduate Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering, strong analytical abilities, and a solid grasp of engineering principles. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, as well as any relevant certifications, is highly beneficial. Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help set you apart in collaborative and fast-paced project environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering innovative solutions and contributing effectively to engineering projects.

What is a graduate engineer?

A graduate engineer is someone who has recently completed an engineering degree, typically a bachelor's or master's, and is starting their professional career in the engineering field. They usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers while gaining practical experience and developing their technical and professional skills. Graduate engineers often participate in structured graduate programs, which may include rotations through different departments or projects. These roles are designed to help them transition from academic study to full professional responsibility.

What types of projects can a Graduate Engineer expect to work on during their first year?

As a Graduate Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that may include supporting senior engineers with design, analysis, testing, or implementation tasks. Early in your career, you might participate in rotations across different departments or disciplines, allowing you to gain exposure to multiple areas such as project management, field work, or research and development. Typically, you'll work as part of a collaborative team, contributing to both short-term assignments and longer-term projects while receiving mentorship and feedback. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build technical skills, understand organizational processes, and identify your preferred career path within engineering.

Job description

Graduate Engineering Program

NorthMark's Graduate Engineering Program is a full-time opportunity based in Dallas, Texas, designed for recent or upcoming graduates who are ready to begin their careers in high-impact, technically challenging roles. Our program offers a structured, hands-on introduction to engineering at scale, with a focus on rapid growth, continuous learning, and meaningful contribution from day one.

Graduates join as full-time members of the engineering team, with immediate responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to real-world systems powering some of the most demanding computational workloads in the industry. You'll work across domains such as software engineering, infrastructure automation, platform development, network operations, and high-performance compute environments.

The program includes:

  • Dedicated mentorship and technical onboarding
  • Structured opportunities for learning and development
  • A collaborative, hybrid work environment (Dallas-based)
  • Access to cutting-edge tools and infrastructure
  • The opportunity to specialize over time while gaining broad exposure early in your career

Learn more about the hiring teams below:

  • Product & Solutions: Our products include a range of cloud platform services, with a focus on high-performance compute (HPC), as well as internal tools that enable the business to grow and scale effectively. This role is designed for recent graduates who are eager to begin a career in product management and want to help deliver innovative, customer-focused solutions. You will gain exposure to the full product lifecycle, from strategy and discovery through to delivery and continuous improvement. You will work closely with engineering, design and commercial teams to help shape product roadmaps, ensuring we build the right solutions for the right problems. You'll also benefit from the mentorship and experience of senior product managers and designers as you develop your skills and establish yourself in the field.
  • HPC Architecture: As an HPC Architecture Graduate, you will help explore, evaluate and benchmark emerging technologies across the full computer architecture stack, including compute, networking and storage. Working with a variety of industry-leading vendors, you will play a key role in shaping the next generation of high-performance computing (HPC) platforms that underpins a large-scale research environment. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of technology innovation, helping to incorporate world-class hardware and software into holistic HPC solutions. You'll collaborate closely with internal architects, external vendors and customers to ensure new technologies are rigorously tested, validated and integrated into future HPC systems.
  • Network Automation: Network Automation team is responsible for designing and building the tools and services that enable automated, scalable, and self-service networking across NMC2's global infrastructure. As a new graduate, you will work closely with experienced engineers to develop your skills in both networking and automation engineering. You'll contribute to projects that improve how we provision, monitor, and operate networks at scale, while learning best practices in Infrastructure-as-Code, observability, and CI/CD. This role is ideal for early-career engineers who are passionate about combining software engineering with networking, and who want to grow their expertise in automation within a large-scale, high-performance compute environment.
  • Security Engineering Team: Our Security Engineering team is responsible for securing the applications and services that power our company, ensuring strong application security across the engineering lifecycle. As a Graduate Security Engineer, you'll work at the intersection of AppSec and developer tooling; building and enhancing in-house security tools, integrating automated scanning into our pipelines and helping teams identify and remediate vulnerabilities early in the development lifecycle. You'll contribute to improving dependency security, strengthening runtime protections and shaping the secure architecture of internal applications. This role offers hands-on experience designing practical security solutions that enable engineers to move quickly while keeping our platform safe, giving you a unique opportunity to influence how modern application security is embedded at scale.
  • DCaaS Architecture: We are seeking a graduate-level Associate Data Analyst to join our Architecture team, focused on the digital infrastructure that powers our high-performance compute environment. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of data analytics, infrastructure operations and emerging technologies. You'll help integrate and analyze data from our Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems, collaborating with architects and engineers to develop insights that improve operational efficiency, capacity planning and system visibility.
  • Solutions Architecture: We are looking for passionate Graduate Engineers to join our growing Solutions Architecture Group, where you'll work at the intersection of high-performance computing (HPC), systems engineering and future infrastructure strategy. As a Graduate Engineer in this team, you will help design and verify tailored HPC solutions that integrate compute, networking and storage technologies across our next-generation cloud platform.
  • Observability: We are looking for a Graduate Observability Platform Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team, where you will focus on building and evolving the observability systems that power our global compute and research infrastructure. As part of the team, you'll help design and scale observability platforms that handle telemetry from industry-leading GPU clusters and large-scale distributed systems.
