What is a graduate consultant?

A Graduate Consultant is an entry-level professional who joins a consulting firm after completing their university degree. They work alongside experienced consultants to provide advice and solutions to organizations in areas such as management, strategy, technology, or operations. Graduate Consultants typically assist with research, data analysis, client presentations, and project coordination while learning industry best practices. This role offers exposure to diverse projects and clients, helping recent graduates develop critical business and analytical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate consultant?

To thrive as a Graduate Consultant, you need a strong academic background, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, often supported by a relevant degree such as business, economics, or engineering. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, data analysis tools, and sometimes basic project management software is typically expected. Excellent communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills that help you engage clients and collaborate with colleagues. These competencies enable effective client solutions, smooth project delivery, and professional growth in a competitive consulting environment.

What are some typical challenges graduate consultants face when transitioning from university to consulting roles?

Graduate Consultants often find the transition from academic settings to the fast-paced consulting environment both exciting and demanding. Common challenges include quickly adapting to client expectations, managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, and learning to communicate insights effectively to both clients and senior team members. However, most firms provide structured training programs and strong mentorship to help new graduates develop essential consulting skills and integrate into collaborative project teams. Proactively seeking feedback and being open to learning can significantly ease this transition.

About Tapio

Tapio is a boutique executive search and advisory firm partnering with private equity firms and their portfolio companies across the energy transition, infrastructure, and digital infrastructure sectors.

We work closely with CEOs, founders, and investors on some of their most important decisions including defining senior leadership roles, assessing executive talent, and building leadership teams that enable long-term value creation.

Our work blends research, judgment, and advisory, sitting at the center of senior decision-making.

The Role

As a Graduate Analyst, you will support executive search and advisory projects for private equity backed businesses and high-growth companies.

This role is designed for graduates who want to build a long-term career in executive search and leadership advisory. You will work alongside experienced consultants on complex, high-stakes searches and advisory engagements, contributing to decisions that directly shape leadership teams and company outcomes.

You will be involved across multiple workstreams, including:

Research and Market Analysis

  • Mapping senior leadership markets and identifying high calibre executives
  • Conducting industry and company research to inform search and advisory work
  • Analyzing talent trends, compensation benchmarks, and leadership hiring dynamics

Executive Search and Advisory Support

  • Supporting the definition of leadership roles, success criteria, and core competencies
  • Assisting with employer value proposition development and role positioning
  • Helping design structured interview and assessment frameworks
  • Synthesizing insights from stakeholder conversations and market data

Client and Stakeholder Exposure

  • Supporting live client projects with CEOs, founders, and private equity investors
  • Assisting in candidate interviews, evaluation, and feedback processes
  • Preparing materials used in senior level discussions and hiring decisions

Data, Process, and Execution

  • Maintaining structured dashboards and search trackers
  • Supporting high quality delivery across multiple concurrent engagements
  • Contributing to the refinement of Tapio’s search and advisory methodologies

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for graduates who are:

  • Intellectually curious, analytical, and commercially minded
  • Motivated to build a career in executive search and leadership advisory
  • Comfortable working with complex information and senior stakeholders
  • Strong communicators with high attention to detail
  • Resilient, proactive, and eager to develop professional judgment over time

No prior search or industry experience is required. We are far more interested in how you think, learn, and communicate than in your previous experience.

What You Will Gain

  • Deep exposure to how CEOs, founders, and private equity investors make leadership decisions
  • Hands-on experience across executive search and advisory engagements from day one
  • A rigorous foundation in executive search and leadership advisory, with clear progression and increasing responsibility
  • Close mentorship and feedback in a high-performance, in-office environment
  • The opportunity to build long-term expertise in a specialist, high-impact profession

Location and Working Style

  • Location: Los Angeles, CA (90036)
  • Working model: Hybrid, in office, four days per week

Why Join Tapio

  • Build a long-term career in search and leadership advisory
  • Work closely with senior executives and investors early in your career
  • Be part of a small, high-performing team where quality and judgment matter
  • Develop deep expertise in leadership, talent, and decision-making within the energy transition and infrastructure sectors
