Role Summary:
 
The Technical Writer for Government Programs will partner directly with engineering, flight operations, manufacturing, and regulatory compliance to craft persuasive technical narratives that clearly articulate system capabilities, mission advantages, and execution strategies. This position plays a critical role in securing new programs and expanding market presence by ensuring proposals and documentation are technically rigorous, customer-focused, and competitively differentiated.

This role translates complex aerospace, mechanical, electrical, and software systems into structured documentation that supports internal teams, customers, regulators, and strategic partners. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced aerospace startup environment and is comfortable working directly with engineers, test teams, and leadership.

Essential Responsibilities:  

  • Lead development of technical proposal content supporting UAV platform and system opportunities across defense, government, and commercial markets.
  • Analyze solicitations (RFPs, RFIs, BAAs, OTAs, and RFQs) to develop compliant and competitive proposal responses.
  • Translate engineering designs, operational concepts, and performance data into persuasive technical narratives aligned with evaluation criteria.
  • Author and integrate proposal sections including:
    • Technical approach and system architecture
    • Mission capability and operational concepts (CONOPS)
    • Engineering development methodology
    • Manufacturing scalability and production readiness
    • Verification, validation, and flight test strategy
    • Safety, reliability, and airworthiness approach
    • Program execution and risk mitigation strategies
  • Support development of win themes, discriminators, and value propositions
  • Develop and maintain System architecture documentation, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Requirements documentation, Test plans and test reports, Verification & validation documentation, Airworthiness documentation packages, Configuration management records
  • Create detailed documentation for UAV subsystems, including:
    • Airframe and mechanical systems
    • Propulsion systems (including hydrogen or alternative energy systems, if applicable)
    • Avionics and flight control systems
    • Ground control systems
    • Embedded and flight software
  • Produce and maintain:
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Assembly instructions and work instructions
    • Maintenance manuals
    • Field service documentation
    • Troubleshooting guides
    • Training materials for operators and technicians
  • Support documentation required for production scaling and quality control.
    • Assist in preparing documentation for: FAA or other civil aviation authorities, Defense or government customers, Export control compliance (e.g., ITAR/EAR awareness), Safety and risk assessment documentation
  • Ensure traceability between requirements, design documentation, and validation artifacts.
  • Work closely with Systems, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers
    • Flight test teams
    • Quality assurance and manufacturing teams
    • Program management
    • Executive leadership
  • Participate in design reviews and technical discussions to ensure documentation accuracy and completeness.

Qualifications & Experience: 

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, Aerospace, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in technical writing within aerospace, robotics, defense, UAV, or high-tech hardware environments.
  • Experience documenting complex electromechanical systems
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering documentation practices.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS, or similar)
    • Version control systems (e.g., Git)
    • Documentation platforms (e.g., Confluence, SharePoint, Markdown-based systems)
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, CAD references, and schematics.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of aerospace standards (e.g., MIL-STD, DO-178/DO-254 awareness) is a plus.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods while working at a computer, reviewing technical data, and producing documentation.
  • Ability to frequently operate a computer, keyboard, and standard office equipment for document creation, editing, and collaboration.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, virtually, and in writing with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to occasionally move throughout office and manufacturing environments to observe processes, equipment, and testing activities.
  • Ability to visually review detailed technical materials, including schematics, engineering drawings, software interfaces, and regulatory documentation.
