Job description

The Digital Learning Development team within UITS Enterprise Applications encompasses a team-based work environment in which we support elearning solutions across Indiana University (IU). The developers in the DLD team collaborate with instructional designers, technologists, and IU faculty to design, build, and enhance online instructional experiences that meet accessibility standards and leverage best practices in instructional design. Team members often work in distributed environments, collaborating across campuses in Bloomington, Indianapolis, and beyond.
Job Summary
Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides an exciting and rewarding opportunity to develop web-based solutions that are integral to the core mission of student success at Indiana University.
  • Works in partnership with IU faculty, instructional designers/technologists, and LMS administrators.
  • Plays a crucial role in the design, development, and deployment of web applications that integrate with the IU eLearning ecosystem.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops high-performing websites and web applications, including building and implementing back-end (APIs, databases) and front end (interfaces, web-based tools) solutions.
  • Consults with stakeholders and/or web administrator to review existing websites/webpages; develops new functionality and/or codes necessary web changes.
  • Develops data structures, web tools and programs while taking into consideration multi-browser and mobile compatibility and performance.
  • Documents website and web application development efforts (changes, new functionality, issue/problem resolution).
  • Tests website and web application performance and functionality, performs quality assurance checks, and fixes bugs accordingly.
  • Acts as a liaison between design/creative teams and stakeholders to ensure optimum functionality, performance, accessibility, scalability, and security of websites and web applications.
  • Ensures that all protocols used in the development and maintenance of websites are up to date and compliant with university policies and standards; researches and stays up-to-date on new industry web standards, emerging media technology, UX/UI design/philosophy, and accessibility standards.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in Computer Science or related field.)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 2 years of full stack web development or related experience.

  • Experience with cloud-based application deployment, such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or similar.
  • Experience with containerized applications (Docker).
  • Experience in the design, development, and consumption of REST APIs.
  • Latest HTML5/CSS/JS web development techniques including responsive and mobile-first design.
  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems, particularly Canvas.
  • Knowledge of IMS Global initiatives, such Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), Question and Test Interoperability (QTI), Caliper Analytics, etc.
  • Experience integrating AI-based web application features; familiar with the use of AI assistance in coding practices.
  • Prior development of browser-based interactive activities and/or games.
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • HTML5 frameworks such as Rivet, Bootstrap, Foundation, or similar.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
