How much do gnc engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for gnc engineer in Ohio is $103,282.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,100.00 and $126,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Gnc Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GNC Engineer, you need a solid background in control systems, dynamics, navigation algorithms, and aerospace engineering, often complemented by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, and experience with sensor integration or real-time embedded systems are highly valued, along with certifications like EIT or PE being beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication skills help you excel in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments. These competencies are critical for designing and optimizing guidance, navigation, and control systems that ensure mission success and safety in aerospace projects.

What is a GNC Engineer job?

A GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) Engineer is responsible for developing algorithms and systems that enable vehicles, such as spacecraft, aircraft, or autonomous robots, to navigate and control their movement accurately. They design control systems, work with sensors and actuators, and develop software for real-time decision-making. GNC engineers use techniques from control theory, signal processing, and machine learning to ensure precision and stability in dynamic environments. Their work is crucial for missions requiring autonomous operation, such as space exploration, missile guidance, and drone navigation.

What are typical day-to-day responsibilities for a GNC Engineer?

As a GNC Engineer, your daily responsibilities often include designing and refining algorithms for guidance, navigation, and control; running simulations to test system performance; and analyzing flight data to troubleshoot and optimize system behavior. You may work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and systems engineers to integrate your solutions into larger aerospace platforms such as rockets, satellites, or UAVs. Collaboration through team meetings, design reviews, and documentation is routine, and you may occasionally participate in field tests or flight demonstrations. Staying organized and adaptive is key, as priorities can shift quickly depending on project timelines and technical challenges.

Job description

Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is a 100% employee-owned engineering services and solutions company that provides high-demand technical expertise in Digital Transformation, Modeling and Simulation, Rapid Capability Development, Test and Evaluation, Artificial Intelligence, Autonomy, Cybersecurity and Mission Assurance.
Job Description
Our government customers want assistance with guidance, navigation and control (GNC) subsystem modeling within their missile models. Specifically, they need our team to augment their GNC and seekers team by modeling and integrating subsystems, such as navigation systems, terminal sensors, and communication systems, within their Simulink-based modeling architecture; furthermore, our customers want to leverage our team's knowledge of navigation techniques, guidance algorithms, Kalman filters, communications, terminal sensing technologies, and sensor/track fusion algorithms. Additionally, our team must adhere to their modeling and simulation (M&S) standards. Also, our team will work directly with our customers to ensure a model satisfying their M&S standards and design goals. Lastly, our team must validate model performance against performance data including the authorship of a model performance report.
Required Experience and Knowledge:
  • Candidates should have at least three years of proven experience in GNC system analysis pertaining to algorithm development; inertial and satellite navigation technology; sensor fusion and integration techniques; and classical and modern controls.
  • Candidates should have knowledge of guidance and navigation techniques of various aerospace vehicles and an understanding of classical dynamics.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated skill sets in modeling, simulation, and analysis software such as MATLAB/Simulink and experience in at least one or more general purpose programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • The candidate must be a motivated self-starter who is able to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment, often with minimal guidance.
  • The candidate must have sufficient communication skills in conveying complex technical issues and in providing comprehensive written, oral and/or digital products. The candidate must also have sufficient technical writing and presentation development skills.
  • The candidate must have good analytic skills and the ability to apply them in a multi-tasking environment where more than one project may require the candidate's participation at any given time (typically one primary project and one or two ancillary projects).

Minimal Qualifications:
  • 8 years of experience with development of 6DOF aerospace models.
  • Demonstrated conscientious and collaborative work habits to effectively augment our customers GNC team.

Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in either electrical or aerospace engineering with an emphasis on either control theory, modeling & simulation, or mathematical optimization of dynamic systems.
  • Specific experience with inertial instruments, inertial measurement units, and global satellite navigation systems and their use in navigation and guidance systems.
  • Specific experience in performing guidance and control error analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with software developmental practices including version control (e.g. via git), test driven software development, and object-oriented programming.

Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field.

Clearance Requirements:
  • Applicants must have at least an active SECRET clearance.
  • Applicants should have an active TOP SECRET clearance with Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (SCI) eligibility.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for most positions.
