What is a GNC engineer?

A GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) Engineer is responsible for developing algorithms and systems that enable vehicles, such as spacecraft, aircraft, or autonomous robots, to navigate and control their movement accurately. They design control systems, work with sensors and actuators, and develop software for real-time decision-making. GNC engineers use techniques from control theory, signal processing, and machine learning to ensure precision and stability in dynamic environments. Their work is crucial for missions requiring autonomous operation, such as space exploration, missile guidance, and drone navigation.

What are typical day-to-day responsibilities for a GNC engineer?

As a GNC Engineer, your daily responsibilities often include designing and refining algorithms for guidance, navigation, and control; running simulations to test system performance; and analyzing flight data to troubleshoot and optimize system behavior. You may work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and systems engineers to integrate your solutions into larger aerospace platforms such as rockets, satellites, or UAVs. Collaboration through team meetings, design reviews, and documentation is routine, and you may occasionally participate in field tests or flight demonstrations. Staying organized and adaptive is key, as priorities can shift quickly depending on project timelines and technical challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the GNC engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GNC Engineer, you need a solid background in control systems, dynamics, navigation algorithms, and aerospace engineering, often complemented by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, and experience with sensor integration or real-time embedded systems are highly valued, along with certifications like EIT or PE being beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication skills help you excel in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments. These competencies are critical for designing and optimizing guidance, navigation, and control systems that ensure mission success and safety in aerospace projects.

Job description

Are you a GNC Engineer looking to design flight control systems for spacecraft that will perform orbital transfers, lunar missions, and deep space transportation?

Do you want to develop robust control algorithms, own the full vehicle control lifecycle, and see your work fly on real missions?

Impulse Space is one of the fastest growing companies in the Space sector. Founded by Tom Mueller, the engineer behind the Merlin and Draco engines that helped transform modern spaceflight, the company is building the transportation infrastructure that powers the next generation of space missions.

What's on offerEquity

This role includes a strong equity package in one of the fastest growing start-ups within the Space sector!

Ownership

You will have the opportunity to develop advanced flight control systems that operate in some of the most demanding environments imaginable.

From early vehicle design through simulation, software implementation, hardware integration, and flight verification, you will play a critical role in delivering spacecraft capable of complex propulsive missions.

As the GNC Engineer your responsibilities will include:
  • Designing, analyzing, and tuning robust guidance and flight control algorithms for spacecraft, upper stages, and lunar landers
  • Performing stability analysis, control verification, and dynamic modelling across a range of propulsive missions
  • Developing and implementing GNC software for both flight systems and high-fidelity simulation environments
  • Creating reusable tools and frameworks to accelerate development across multiple spacecraft programmes
  • Validating flight software using Software-in-the-Loop (SITL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) test environments
As the GNC Engineer you will bring:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering discipline
  • Experience designing and analyzing flight control systems for propulsive vehicles
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB and C++
  • Experience performing control system analysis in both the time and frequency domains
  • A solid understanding of spacecraft dynamics, propulsion systems, and the complete GNC development lifecycle
  • Experience developing control systems for upper stages, spacecraft, or planetary landers would be highly advantageous
  • Knowledge of thrust vector control (TVC), reaction control systems (RCS), and propellant slosh modelling would be beneficial

This GNC Engineer opportunity offers the chance to join one of the most exciting companies in commercial spaceflight. You will work alongside world-class engineers to develop the flight control systems that enable spacecraft to perform increasingly ambitious missions beyond Earth orbit. If you're looking for technical ownership, challenging engineering problems, and the opportunity to see your work operate in space, this is an exceptional opportunity.

All successful applicants will be contacted within two working days.
