What is the glass ceiling?

The glass ceiling is a metaphorical barrier that prevents certain individuals, often women and minorities, from advancing to higher levels of leadership or management within organizations, despite having the qualifications or abilities necessary for those positions. This invisible obstacle is not an official or legal barrier, but rather results from discriminatory practices, stereotypes, and organizational culture. The glass ceiling can affect career progression, pay, and professional development opportunities. Efforts to break the glass ceiling include promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

What strategies can women use to overcome the glass ceiling and advance into leadership roles?

Women aiming to break through the glass ceiling often benefit from actively seeking mentorship and sponsorship within their organizations, building strong professional networks, and continuously developing leadership skills through training and feedback. Demonstrating measurable results, advocating for oneself, and seeking roles with increased responsibility can also help stand out for advancement. Many organizations now offer leadership development programs and employee resource groups specifically designed to support women in career progression. Collaborating with allies and engaging in open conversations about career goals with supervisors can further create visibility and open doors to leadership opportunities.

Job description

ZwillGen is a boutique law firm that represents some of the biggest names in technology on a range of Internet-related legal issues including cybersecurity, privacy, government surveillance, alternative data, and online gaming. Our firm culture is hardworking and positive, but more casual than traditional law firms.

Clients always tell us we're not a typical law firm, and we like it that way. Big Law bureaucracy and stuffy offices aren't our thing. We like to be more like our clients: innovators, glass ceiling breakers, and forward thinkers. For us, work isn't just "another day at the office," each day presents a new opportunity to help our clients, make a difference, and have fun while doing it.

We also like to keep things casual. At ZwillGen, jeans and a t-shirt is the norm and a suit and tie is likely to turn heads. Speaking of turning heads, did someone say snacks? We keep our kitchen well-stocked with a wide variety of snacks and beverages to help our team stay focused and ready to go.

When we're not collaborating or snacking at the office, we like to meet up regularly for happy hours, festive celebrations, charity races such as Lawyers Have Heart, and more. We also get together once a year for our annual firm retreat, a long weekend filled with team-building activities, professional development, family-style meals, and more.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off and parental leave
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage
  • Eligibility for the firm's Perks! fringe benefit program
