What is a genetic counselor assistant?

Genetic Counselor Assistants are professionals who support genetic counselors in their daily work. They help with tasks such as collecting patient information, managing paperwork, coordinating appointments, and preparing laboratory samples. Their role allows genetic counselors to focus more on direct patient care and complex case management. Genetic Counselor Assistants do not provide medical advice but play a key role in ensuring that the genetic counseling process runs smoothly and efficiently.

What does a genetic counselor assistant do?

As a genetic counselor assistant, your responsibilities are to provide support to a genetic counselor, perform numerous administrative and clerical duties, and interact with the counseling office’s patients and families to get a medical history and provide them with more information about the services and procedures at the clinic. Your clerical work includes organizing medical information and forms, filling out insurance billing paperwork, and scheduling patient appointments. You may also help genetic counselors to test new products or ensure that equipment and best practices are up to date.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a genetic counselor assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Genetic Counselor Assistant, you need a background in biology or related sciences, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills, often supported by a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with genetic testing databases, EHR systems, and laboratory information management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, empathy, and teamwork abilities help you support patients and collaborate effectively with genetic counselors and healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate information management, high-quality patient support, and efficient clinic operations.

What are some typical responsibilities of a genetic counselor assistant, and how do they support the genetic counseling team?

Genetic Counselor Assistants (GCAs) handle various administrative and preparatory tasks that support genetic counselors and streamline patient care. Typical responsibilities include managing patient intake forms, gathering family and medical histories, coordinating genetic testing logistics, and updating electronic health records. GCAs also assist with scheduling, handle correspondence with patients and laboratories, and may help prepare educational materials. By managing these critical support tasks, GCAs free up genetic counselors to focus on complex counseling sessions and interpretation of genetic results, making them integral members of the genetics team.

Assistant General Counsel (Durham)

Strata Careers

Durham, NC • On-site

Full-time

This job post has expired today. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

Strata Clean Energy, as a national developer, contractor, owner and operator of solar energy and battery energy storage projects, provides its attorneys with a multi-disciplinary law practice. Strata’s attorneys serve as key members of the legal department and assist the General Counsel and other members of Strata’s executive team in executing overall strategic objectives from both legal and business perspectives. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, this position will work closely with personnel in all of Strata’s departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work alongside external counsel, and lead internal resources, in negotiating, drafting and closing corporate and project level (debt and tax equity) finance transactions.
  • Provide ongoing advice to the finance, accounting and asset management teams regarding post-closing questions and issues relating to debt and tax equity transactions.
  • Support and advise the asset management and operations and maintenance teams, including contract negotiation and administration.
  • Provide leadership and support relating to any and all legal matters and questions presented to the legal team on an as‑needed basis, such as reviewing and analyzing disputes, contractor licensing requirements, due diligence requests, RFP reviews, procurement contracts, HR matters, IT matters, etc.
  • Identify, manage and advise business clients and executive management on risk allocation and mitigation.
  • Contribute to creating, developing and implementing processes, procedures, best practices, systems and controls within the legal department and more broadly, and recommend improvements thereto.
  • Stay constantly abreast of current events and developments affecting the renewable energy industry, with particular emphasis on possible impacts to Strata’s business, and help evaluate opportunities and issues relating thereto.
  • Bring a positive, energetic, “can‑do,” problem‑solver attitude to the workplace.
  • While close collaboration with external counsel is essential to this position, the successful candidate will be working directly alongside, and not merely managing or “outsourcing” legal functions to external counsel. The successful candidate is expected to understand the core issues, negotiation points, contracts and risks as well as external counsel, and is responsible for directing external counsel in a manner so as to achieve Strata’s desired outcomes.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Current license to practice law in a U.S. state.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience (e.g., tax, finance, M&A, general commercial/transactional work), including renewable energy experience.
  • Possess effective drafting, negotiating and client communication skills to: (a) identify complex legal issues, (b) develop and implement alternative solutions, (c) negotiate independently and (d) cope with fast‑paced and ever‑changing relationships.
  • Problem‑solver with pragmatic approach to satisfactorily address legal issues in relation to commercial objectives.
  • Possess effective time management, project management, dispute resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Creative, adaptable and independent thinker.
  • Strong team player.
  • Ability to focus, direct and manage the efforts of external legal and other resources.
  • Quality and execution focused.
  • Possess strong leadership qualities to motivate colleagues and clients to drive initiatives to conclusion rapidly and efficiently.
