Job Description
Under the general supervision of Research Scientists, the Research Technician I provides technical support for research activities in horticulture. This position involves performing routine tasks related to plant propagation, nursery management, experimental setup, data collection, germplasm collection data management, and maintenance of horticultural research environments. The role requires attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to assist with ongoing scientific studies.
This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.
This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
Responsibilities:
  • Facilitates plant propagation, nursery stock, and horticultural research trials.
  • Collects samples and measurement data from experiments. Implements and maintains data collection and summarization for field and greenhouse trials.
  • Monitors plant growth, soil conditions, irrigation schedules, and pest management strategies.
  • Collects and compiles data, computes quantities, and extends projections.
  • Assembles and operates horticultural research equipment.
  • Assists senior staff members in conducting major field and greenhouse experiments and consults in developing horticultural research protocols.
  • Assists student workers and supports undergraduate and graduate research students in their assigned projects.
  • Participates in college wide events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Other Requirements:
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Ability to exert heavy force.
  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS in Horticulture, Agriculture, Biology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related experience in horticulture, plant science, or greenhouse/nursery operations.
  • Strong knowledge of plant taxonomy, nomenclature, plant care, propagation techniques, and horticultural research methods.
  • Ability to operate and maintain horticultural equipment.
  • Readiness to obtain a Texas pesticide applicator license if required.
