Designer/Engineer - Substation Engineering Contractor Oversight
SCS Technical Shared Services, Substation Engineering
This position will be located at the Forest Park General Services Headquarters in Atlanta, GA
WORK LOCATION
  • This position will be located at the Forest Park General Services Headquarters in Atlanta, GA
  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
  • Field work can include site visits to various work locations and may require overnight travel.
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commuting distance.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Substation Contractor Oversight Designers / Engineers are responsible for oversight of engineering, design, and coordination of substation projects completed by outside design engineering firms. This includes conducting quality assurance reviews of completed substation design packages and providing ongoing guidance and performance feedback to engineering firms.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a "Safety First" mentality and leading by example.
  • Provide oversight and technical assistance/expertise on design/standards/tools to external engineering firms.
  • Provide quality assurance reviews as required, assist in scheduling resources, and provide developmental feedback to engineering firms.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Substation Design.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company subject matter experts to resolve equipment and material issues.
  • Provide support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance.
  • Perform site visits for projects including pre-engineering / pre-construction meetings, during construction, and post-construction as required to provide expertise on projects and to evaluate and provide feedback on contractor performance. Some overnight travel will be required.
  • Participate in substation design review meetings.
  • Support Southern Company's design criteria and standardization effort.
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
  • Provide assistance as part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Southern Company service territory.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (Engineer)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (Designer)
  • Associate Degree with minimum 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer)
  • No Degree with minimum 8 years relevant industry experience (Designer)

Experience:
  • Substation design or field experience required.
  • Project Management experience is preferred.
  • Experience providing Quality Assurance reviews on design packages is a plus.
  • Experience mentoring and providing performance feedback is preferred.
  • Experience using Autodesk Suite is preferred.
  • Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred.
  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Ability to be an effective mentor to others and teach job-related skills.
  • Good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred.

  • Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.
