What is a general contractor?

General contractors are professionals or companies responsible for overseeing and managing construction projects from start to finish. They coordinate and supervise subcontractors, source materials, handle permits, and ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget. General contractors serve as the main point of contact between clients and all parties involved in the construction process, ensuring quality and safety standards are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general contractor?

To thrive as a General Contractor, you need a solid understanding of construction methods, project management, budgeting, and building codes, often supported by a relevant degree or significant hands-on experience. Familiarity with construction management software, estimating tools, and relevant safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills help manage subcontractors, clients, and complex timelines effectively. These abilities are crucial for delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining quality standards.

What are some common challenges a general contractor might face when managing multiple subcontractors on a large construction project?

General Contractors often encounter challenges in coordinating schedules, ensuring consistent communication, and maintaining quality standards across multiple subcontractors. Delays from one subcontractor can impact the entire project timeline, so effective project management and contingency planning are essential. Additionally, General Contractors must regularly monitor progress, address conflicts or misunderstandings promptly, and ensure that all work complies with safety and regulatory requirements. Strong leadership and organizational skills are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering successful projects.

How much do most general contractors make?

Most general contractors earn a median annual salary of around $97,000, with salaries typically ranging from $60,000 to over $150,000 depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Experienced contractors with specialized skills or working on large projects tend to earn higher wages. Certification and strong management skills can also influence earning potential.

What does a general contractor usually do?

A general contractor oversees construction projects from start to finish, coordinating labor, materials, and schedules to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. They manage subcontractors, obtain permits, and ensure safety and building codes are followed, often requiring project management skills and relevant certifications.

Job description

Job Title: Estimator

Location: Springfield, MA

Salary: $100,000–$190,000 Base

$100M–$200M+ Projects | Leading New England General Contractor

An outstanding opportunity to join one of the top General Contractors in New England, with an exceptional reputation for delivering complex, high-value construction projects across Massachusetts.

The business has successfully delivered more than $2BN worth of construction projects and continues to secure major work across the region. Despite that scale, they've retained the culture and accessibility of a family-owned contractor — operating with lean teams where individual contribution is genuinely recognized.

The Opportunity

They're looking to add an experienced Estimator to their Worcester-based preconstruction team.

You'll have the opportunity to estimate some of the largest projects in the Massachusetts market, including:

  • $100M–$200M+ major construction projects
  • 100,000–300,000+ sq. ft. developments
  • Large-scale educational and public-sector projects
  • Private projects typically ranging from $30M–$50M
  • Massachusetts Chapter 149A work

This isn't a role where you'll simply sit behind a desk producing numbers.

You'll have direct client exposure, participate in detailed estimate reconciliation meetings, work closely with experienced leadership and play an important role in mentoring and developing junior estimators.

Why Join?

  • $100,000–$190,000 base salary
  • $2BN+ of projects successfully delivered
  • Join one of the top-ranked General Contractors in the region
  • Work on major $100M–$200M+ projects
  • Excellent pipeline of large-scale Massachusetts work
  • Established, financially strong and family-owned business
  • Lean team where your contribution is highly visible
  • Direct exposure to clients and senior leadership
  • Opportunity to mentor and develop junior estimators
  • Healthcare, dental & vision
  • Approximately 3 weeks PTO
  • 401(k)
  • Flexibility around office attendance for the right experienced candidate

Who They're Looking For

They're deliberately open-minded on background.

You could be an Estimator or Senior Estimator looking for greater responsibility and larger projects, or an experienced Project Manager looking to transition into preconstruction.

The key is being someone who can get into the detail of the numbers while also confidently sitting across the table from a client and walking them through an estimate.

Previous Chapter 149A experience is advantageous but not essential.

If you're looking to work on some of Massachusetts' largest projects with a highly respected contractor that combines the resources and project scale of a major GC with the culture and visibility of a family-owned business, this is an opportunity worth discussing.
