Job description

Purpose of the Position
Leads garage operations to ensure low cost, safe, clean, efficient and dependable equipment for the operating departments.
Essential Position Responsibilities - This is a Salary Exempt position.
Manages garage operations. Responsible for maintaining fully functional equipment and vehicles within assigned territory. Directs and leads the activities of the mechanics, parts personnel and other shop employees. Monitors workloads and prioritizes activities such as the scheduling of equipment repairs, roadside assistance, and vehicle maintenance for all facilities accordingly. Participates in the Federal Annual Inspection conducted on every vehicle under the care of the assigned garage. Maintains all necessary licenses pertaining to the assigned facility.
Delegates and performs maintenance in all motor vehicles and vehicle equipment for the assigned garage. Instructs subordinates in the proper use of shop equipment and tools. Troubleshoots maintenance problems and recommends corrective action while providing assistance with repairs when needed. Estimates repair times and evaluates all maintenance work to ensure completion within established time frame. May use necessary tools for heavy truck maintenance, tire changing equipment, fuel tanks and pumps, office equipment, personal computer and personal safety equipment as needed or required.
Ensures accurate and effective reporting. Tracks and reports efficiencies, overtime, incidents and near misses. Completes daily shift reports regarding employees, inventory, safety walkthroughs, etc. Maintains all site reports required by State and Federal agencies in regards to the disposal of oil and tires as well as stormwater permits.
Responsible for parts room operations including the purchasing of spare and repair parts and supplies, inventory management, etc. Attends all safety meetings and trains all employees on safe practices and policies. Tracks inventory on the daily, weekly, and monthly basis for the entire garage.
Administers Preventive Maintenance programs. Reviews all work orders to ensure accuracy. Revises Preventive Maintenance reports and monitors completion.
Manages employees. Directs and supervises employees' work activities and monitors work performance. Collaborates with Human Resources to screen, interview and hire candidates. Administers disciplinary actions and recommends performance improvement actions in collaboration with the HR Manager. Monitors work performance and recommends compensation decisions based on guidelines. Follows Simmons values to develop and maintain a favorable working relationship with all employees. Promotes a cooperative and harmonious environment in order to facilitate positive employee morale, productivity, and continued improvement.
Participates as a member of the Team. Participates in the ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs and policies; coordinates work to ensure best practices with all team members. Attends appropriate team meetings. As a member of the Team, fosters strong cohesiveness regarding all major issues; e.g., direction, annual plan, budget, policy changes, etc. Accepts responsibility to quickly identify any areas that lack cohesiveness, bringing them to the attention of the team leader and working with the team in a supportive manner to resolve issues and actively look for ways, and reinforce actions needed, to achieve synergy possible within the larger organization.
Simmons Operating systems principles and objectives: Is familiar with Simmons' established operating systems (e.g. quality, security, office environment, company policies, LEAN); understands the responsibility to maintain familiarity with the systems and this position's role in support of these systems - including a consideration of the impact of individual actions on the systems and the responsibility to communicate concerns and improvement ideas.

Physical Activities: Enters and locates information on a computer. Visually verifies information, often in small print. Communicates with Customers, Vendors, or Employees via telephone, in person, and/or electronic mail. May present information to small or large groups. Must be able to work in various temperatures. Move about in a garage environment and surrounding property. Lifts up to 50 lbs. as needed.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Will be required to use appropriate footwear, safety glasses, and other safety equipment as needed. As required by visiting facility.
Travel: Travels domestically to and from multiple facilities or work-sites, possibly requiring overnight stays.
Technical Experience: 3 years mechanical industry experience in a supervisory role. Possess working knowledge of all systems of heavy trucks and trailers, special equipment such as feed trailers, dump trailers, forklifts and hydraulics.
Industry Experience: Preference for poultry or food processing organization.
Minimum Education: High school degree or equivalent. Diesel mechanic certification.
