BACKGROUND The Mountain West Conference is one of the premier NCAA Division I athletic conferences, sponsoring nationally recognized football and basketball programs while supporting the success of student-athletes across its member institutions. The Conference oversees regular season competition, championship administration, officiating programs, governance initiatives, and operational support across multiple sports.
The Mountain West is committed to providing aspiring sports industry professionals with meaningful opportunities to gain hands-on experience in conference office operations, championship administration, sport governance, and event management. Through direct involvement with football and basketball administration, fellows develop a comprehensive understanding of collegiate athletics operations while working alongside Conference staff, institutional administrators, officials, and external partners.
SUMMARYThe Sport Administration Fellow will support the administration and operations of Mountain West football, men's basketball, women's basketball, and broader Conference initiatives. This role will provide administrative, operational, championship, research, communications, and event support with a primary focus on football and basketball.
This position will work closely with Conference staff, institutional administrators, officiating personnel, championship staff, and external stakeholders while gaining exposure to multiple areas of collegiate athletics administration. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and interested in pursuing a career in college athletics, sport administration, championship operations, or conference office leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIESFootball Administration & Operations- Support regular season football administration, scheduling, game operations, institutional communication, and operational planning.
- Assist with meeting preparation, agendas, presentations, reports, and follow-up documentation.
- Manage football communications, game information distribution, contact lists, and institutional reporting requirements.
- Maintain scheduling records, television inventory information, operational documents, and game management materials.
- Support football game day operations, issue tracking, staffing coordination, and postgame documentation.
- Assist with football event planning, including media days, officiating meetings, game management meetings, and Conference events.
- Support football technology operations, including replay systems, coach-to-player communication, video systems, and related vendor coordination.
Football Officiating & Championship Support- Provide administrative support for football officiating operations and evaluation processes.
- Assist with officiating communications, reports, assignments, travel documentation, payments, and performance tracking.
- Support planning and execution of the Mountain West Football Championship Game.
- Assist with championship logistics, credentials, staffing, signage, team communication, and operational readiness.
Men's & Women's Basketball Administration- Support regular season basketball administration, scheduling, communications, and game operations.
- Assist with planning and execution of the Mountain West Men's and Women's Basketball Championships
- Support championship operations including credentials, volunteers, awards, signage, event schedules, and team communication.
- Assist with officiating administration, evaluations, communications, invoice tracking, and operational support.
- Maintain basketball records, historical data, championship information, and sport administration materials.
- Conduct research and prepare presentations related to scheduling, officiating, postseason selection, competitive trends, and governance initiatives.
General Administration & Special Projects- Support Conference-wide research, benchmarking, and operational projects.
- Assist with budget tracking, invoice processing, payment documentation, and administrative support functions.
- Contribute to projects related to NCAA legislation, membership standards, championships, governance, and student-athlete experience initiatives.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
QUALIFCATIONS- Bachelor's degree required.
- Experience in college athletics, conference office operations, championships, sport administration, football operations, basketball operations, compliance, or event management preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare reports, presentations, meeting materials, and professional correspondence.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience working with data, tracking documents, and reporting tools preferred.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays during football and basketball seasons.
- Professional judgment, discretion, and ability to handle confidential information.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively with administrators, officials, institutional staff, vendors, and external partners.
- Strong interest in college athletics administration, championships, officiating, football operations, basketball operations, and conference governance.
